Texas overlanding anyone?

I would be game for a trip. I am retiring from the Army right now, but I start burning leave in Dec through Jan. I will be in Johnson Valley for a couple of weeks before KOH supporting a race team (commo.) But I would be game after that. I think I will be a bit of a wonderer with the truck after KOH, just exploring and relaxing.

Hey folks, I live in Houston and would be up for meeting some local folks to trade ideas/share rig walks/trip.

I just traded my Hummer for a 2018 Silverado 1500 LTZ crewcab shortbed, 4WD w/ G80 locker, add-a-leaf in the rear, ARE cap w/ DECKED drawer system. On-board air is underway and a few other mods being considered.

I can't do serious 4WD in it but can definitely handle most of the easier trails in Big Bend and certainly can do most stuff on the coastline.

Hit me up on the site if you want to grab a beer sometime as a start.

What are some good areas? I live in TX but Im a BB newb.

Lilkia, I like going S/SW down through Brazos and that area for coastal trips and flat out W to Big Bend for desert( a long drive but well worth it). Have not tried any of the woodlands to the N of Houston...it seems mostly boating-oriented but I'll bet there are some decent places to get lost. Anything close to Houston is very much crapped by overuse and abuse.

I live a little north of Houston and big bend and a park north of there (can't think of the name right now) seem to be the only overloading I can find.

RoadWarrior I was wondering about Big Bend specifically. Just looking for good places to hit in the park. Im about 10 hours from the park and I havent made the trip yet. Also what Brazos are you refering to? All I can think of is Brazos County but its not really coastal.

River Road, Black Gap Road, and Old Ore Road are all great. Lots of Primitive camp sites but you have to go to the Ranger Station and reserve the spot. This is peak season so pre-plan and have several alternative sites in mind. Unfortunately you can't reserve them by phone or on-line, only in person.

Just left Big Bend. They got lots of rain so check in on conditions. Old Ore Road was closed due to a flipped Unimog blocking trail. Black Gap was in pretty rough shape based on people I talked to so will require care. We drove length of River Road before the rain - no idea what it's like now. Some of the low spots had decent drop offs which could be worse with rain.

I'd check with park before I made the drive. But, it is an awesome place.

The trails can change a bit depending on recent past weather. The ranger station has an excellent road guide when you get there, definitely purchase one. Some of the books are good too.

1. Go online and review different videos and trail reviews.
2. Call the Ranger station and ask advice - they are sooo very helpful and haved steered me right every time.
3. Check in with the Ranger station on the way in, especially if camping. Be there when they open and you'll have a great chance at a campsite. I usually arrive around 2-5am and sleep in the truck the first night, then drive immediately to the station for a campsite.

As far as trails, unless you are dying to crawl some shelves and rocks, steer clear of Black Gap.

River Road, Glenn Springs both really good. If you hit the Ranger station like I suggest, you can immediately know which roads you can/want to navigate. There are plenty of light and medium difficulty trails and a few pretty hard ones.

Thing to be careful on:
1. Washes - they can be sloggy even if it hasnt rained in the last week
2. Rocks - air down!

Lilkia - sorry, I meant Brazoria....it's SW of Galveston - that whole area has remote roads across some of the islands, some points only accessible by ferry so check weather/logistics. Also, mosquitoes down there can be brutal and gators might eat your dog, so act accordingly.

Guys thanks for the advice Im trying to talk the wife into a trip up to BB in January depending on weather. Id like to get a trip in as it looks like we may be moving to the NE. Outside of exploring NM I really havent had much of a chance to crawl around the SW. Well maybe in a few years a toterhome with a new buggy or a pull behind for the burb will change that. Who knows maybe I will build another lilkia. I still have set of springs and strut spacers I made for a 1st gen sportage. I miss that thing.

RoadWarrior gotcha on Brazoria. I thought that might be what you meant but wasnt sure if there was somewhere else I wasnt familiar with.

If you want fantastic views of the river and solitude, La Clocha and Loop Camp 1 are both off River Road. Any of the Pine Canyon sites are remote with great mountain views You'll need permits for any of them.

Enjoy and be safe.
