That is MSRP. Who buys a vehicle on MSRP? I was speaking to the diesel Colorado to a gas Silverado anyway in my comments.
At the moment, there is $8500 on the hood of a Silverado crew cab LT All-Star edition. Given the beatings GM is taking from losing sales to RAM it is pretty safe to say the discounts will continue on the Silverado for quite some time to come. With typical tradition when a new product arrives such as the new Colorado it won’t have any money on the hood and even a greater chance the diesel never will and even if it does, it will be long time down the road.
The closest vehicle the with powertrain options similar to the Colorado powertrain is the RAM ProMaster van where it’s little diesel is a $4000 premium over the gas. Since no pricing has been announced on the diesel Colorado we’ll use the $4000 as a guesstimation as to the diesel in the Colorado.
Figure a crew cab standard bed Z71 4x4 Colorado with a gas has an MSRP of $35,290. Add another $4000 to that for a diesel option and you now have a $39,000 truck little truck. Add the up level radio and your well into the $40’s. Speculating here, but it is very unlikely any rebates will exist.
Meanwhile a crew cab standard bed 4x4 Silverado All-Star has an MSRP of $43,110. Take off the $8500 in rebates at now you have a $34,610 well equipped full size truck. My calculator says the gas full-size would be over $5000 less than a diesel Colorado as we can speculate as of now.
Sure you can use MSRP’s for comparisons because that is all we really have but we all know nobody buys anything on MSRP. Each deal will be different but I still suspect the diesel Colorado will cost more than a well-equipped Silverado in real world transactions but only time will tell! That said, I do believe the gas Colorado is priced right when compared to its big brother. It’s the diesel Colorado that is going to have to sell itself. Only those that really really want a little truck with a diesel will buy them, which the way people talk….GM dealers will have suckers lined up to buy the diesel Colorados one after another. If that turns out to be the case, deals and rebates will be skinny if at all. Deals and rebates don’t get applied to vehicles that sell well with no real competition.
Would I buy a Colorado?....yeah, maybe! Definitely a V6 gas. Neat little trucks! But I am one of those guys that have no rhyme or reason to what I want to buy. In seriousness, I am looking to buy a new ride sometime in early 2015 as it is getting harder to have a baby seat in my daily driver Silverado HD extended cab. It is now time to turn the baby seat around to forward facing but there isn’t room because the baby seat rests on the rear window of the extended cab. Even though none of these vehicles directly compete in the same arena they are what I like and are considering; Colorado Crew Cab Z71 4x4 short bed, 1WT Silverado 5.3L crew cab standard bed 4x4 (with vinyl interior…yes, I am one of those guys that like bare bones trucks), Ram Power Wagon Tradesman (or SLT) or VW Jetta GLI. Odd combination of vehicles to consider but I have a reason to consider each one of these. If I get the Colorado or Jetta, I’ll keep my 2001 Silverado. If I go for the Silvy or PW the 2001 Silverado will have to go mainly because I don’t have room to park everything now as it is. Already have 7 vehicles, which only one is conducive for baby hauling (wife’s 2014 Impala) LOL. I will forgo my GM discount and get the Power Wagon if the 6.4L impresses me and the deal is right. The 5.7L Hemi was not impressive at this altitude especially after driving 8.1L engines for the past 13 years. I test drove a Jetta GLI a few weeks ago and loved it! Poor mans BMW for sure.
Back to comparing green apples to red apples……….
