The American IFA Project Has Officially Started.

After a couple of weeks of gleaning ideas and validating what I thought were original plans from this amazing forum, I ordered the steel tube and have wittled the design down to an eighteen foot length with a tapered rear. After much deliberating on whether or not to keep the army bed that came with the truck, I decided to keep it on but since it is a hinged "drop side" i will be removing the bed walls and weld the framing a straight to the bed. I also decided give the front of the compartment a taper so it is a little more aero dynamic. Every little bit helps.

I am getting alot of parts from an RV I bought with a roof leak. I gutted it and took all the good stuff, heater, ac (haven't decided where I am going to put this.), tanks, toilet, sinks and water pump, converter, gauges, water heater, fold out couch and windows. Fortunately everything works. Thought the AC was up the creek, but found out that the fan was block by a bees nest.

I have a coleman powermate 5kw generator that is relatively new but it is horribly loud. Have to either get a new genny or do a muffler mod so there can be peace in the neighbor hood. I found a solar panel company locally that you may all be interested in. They have this incredibly flexible solar panels that they are developing. Here is the websitehttp://www.konarka.com

The other challenge is trying fit room to sleep six in this small space. Here is the breakdown.

Kitchen table folds into single bed, mom and dad sleep above in a recessed pull down bunk that is hinged and follows the curve of the ceiling when stowed. The couch folds out into a double sleeper and last but not least is the bunk over the door that will store compressed into the ceiling. Access is gained with a ladder that i will have to design.

The Bathroom is another big challenge that will have rather cramped quarters, with the toilet behind the shower and has to be accessed through the shower. So there will be no access to the toilet if somebody is taking a shower. I am also planning on having an outdoor shower.

I will be the first to admit that these may be cramped quarters for a family of six so we will see how it goes. My kids are small, (2,4,6, and 8) and plan on spending most the time out and about. Also plan on packing an outside tent/camping bundle so we can truly appreciate the great outdoors like my dad did with me and my brother and sisters.

Here are some pics of the planned build. I am very open to criticisms, improvements, ideas, hints and tips.

Here are the smaller pics. Sorry didn't realize they were going to be so big.

Much better with the smaller pics, Thanks. Looks like some good ideas for your camper.

First design change.

Switching sides with the couch and dinette area. Forgot, have to put the water tank and pump on the same side as the sinks and water works.

Nice plan! But trust me, doing a simple muffler mod, or anything else remotely easy, will not quiet that Coleman enough to make you popular in a campground. I used to have one that I used occasionally for running a well pump on a piece of remote property I had. Too much of the noise is from internal sources, cooling air flow, etc.

I think this link will work; if not, copy and paste....

And you can use the 'search' box at the top of that page to access a lot more related info.

Man, that is cool. You are lucky to have a wife that will dig something like that. I would suggest a RTT for the kids with an access door through the roof. I don't know if they all could fit inside, especially as they grow older and you might feel safer if they are on top of the truck, in lieu of being out on the ground in unfamiliar territory.

Funny you mention a hatch. (See the "German" soldier popped out of the top?) The cab actually has one already built into it and the two oldest ones love it. I had the idea of putting an RTT on the enclosed M105 military trailer that came with the truck. But the trailer is a lumbersome add on especially if I get in a tight situation that I need to turn around. So I wrote that idea off. I was going to put on top solar panels and still need to figure out where to put the AC unit. My other half won't get on the bus without it. Hopefully there will be enough real estated left for the RTT. I think you have a great idea. I will look into an RTT that I can integrate into the design.

Thanks!

We are a family of 7 so we usually have to use 2 tents. I'm always worried about my kids in the other tent so I never really sleep soundly. I am selling my 109 to purchase a Ford E350 and do U-joint's 4x4 conversion on it. I will most likely put two RTT's on top of it with a pass through between them on the roof.

Let the fun begin.

My metal was delivered today so I got work on the bed. I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep the bed with the drop sides on. I decided to go ahead and use the base of the bed for the floor of the camper but decided to get rid of the drop sides. I will be glad I went this route as I got into dismantling the drop side.

The original plan was to take out the cotter pins then kock out the hinge bars. They were basically welded into place with rust and paint. When I went to fold down the drop side it just stuck in place. I had to man handle this by kicking and pushing the dropside with one of the extensions in the placeholder on the bed. When exercising the dropside, I had inadvertently broke off two the five hinge bars. I guess they were so rusted the just broke loose. The others I had to go a little extreme with. When in doubt I used the best Christmas gift ever, my SawsALL.

This is what it looked like after the removal. I will do the other side tomorrow. Then cut off the hinges and grind them down.

I got a great tip from the UPS freight delivery guy. My metal tubing was 24 feet in length and weighed about three hundred pounds. He couldn't pull into my drive way as it was a freight delivery. Didn't know how I was going to get the metal strapped together into the work area. Thought I would have to unband it and take it out piece by piece.

He told me to put my hand truck in the middle of the load long ways and the weight of the metal held it in place on the handtruck. I just picked up one end of the tubing and walked it down the drive like a 24 foot long hand truck. I then again utilized this technique to put my dropside along side my garage. Thanks UPS Guy!

Bedwork.

Today I finished cutting out the inset of the rear steps that are going into camper. I went through three Milwaukee blades on my sawsall. The bed itself was only 12 or 11 gauge but the supports and some supports that were welded into the underneath of the bed doubled the steel thickness. Wish I had a plasma cutter or even a torch!

What RTT You lookin at?

Not sure yet. Two hard shell Maggiolinas would be kinda cool. But will most likely be two of the larger family size units from ARB, Overland, Overzone. I need to concentrate on selling my 109 first so I can buy the van!:victory:

Absolutely jealous of the fact that your wife is into the big truck build.
