The AMV CDL kit

Greetings All! I wanted to share some pics and ideas on the AMV CDL kit from down under - Basically, it rocks. The kit is very complete and easy to install. They recommend going in from under the car as opposed to removing the console / doing it from inside. The wires are pre-measured and they include zip ties. The construction is very impressive - NASA-esque actually. There is a re-seller that has one in an aquarium set to constantly switch on and off - no problems in over a year. :snorkel: With this kit I can see the value of my $400 opposed to the $400 for a lever, cable and a bracket.

Anywho, for anyone considering this worthwhile upgrade to a DII I can easily recommend the AMV bits.

CDL = Center Diff Lock. When the Discoveries came out with Traction Control, they took away the center diff locking lever. Later they removed all the bits inside to make it lock at all. After a few years of this glaring error, Land Rover added the lever etc. again.

This AMV unit is an electronic "switch" that will lock the transfer case with the push of a button. It is quite the upgrade for the Discovery II's that can use it. Coupled with the Traction Control, your guts become the real limiting factor in off-raod fun. Add an ARB Air Locker in the front an rear axles to this mix and you could, well.. you could do just about anything.

Ya know it may even be a nice bit o kit on a D1 if one wanted to do a retro on it. After a month of having Tim Hortons spilt all over my little knob it is definitely more of a chore to get the diff lock in Not to mention freeing up a bit of space for more gizmos

well wish me luck. My local shop found this online and since I was heading Down Under I picked it up. AMV was awesome to deal with!

Next week the shop will be installing it!

I know Bill at GBR had these for a while or something similar. A few guys in the USA love them but I heard too many horror stories from Australia about these failing and ruining tcases.

Remember to keep a spare relay with you. And it's always a good idea to k ow how to manually disengage CDL if the need should arise

Note only certain D2 years have the lever, I think up to 2002

Installing a D1 linkage is also a usual way of making it operational

note remove the solenoid and throw away as well, as when it fails you'll regret not doing it...........

like me at the bottom of cliffhanger trail in Moab watching the group pull away across the canyon leaving me with a 2hr drive back to GJ to rip out the ruddy thing and drove back the same night ...........

take off your shifter knob, clean all the old grease off the linkage and goop on some new lubricant around all the moving parts, especially the shifter assmbly and bushings. It will be good as new.

I just made a $10 lever that is actuated from outside the passenger door on the outer side of the framerails. A little jimmying and it works good.
