The Forgotten Continent Expedition

I was a car guy most of my life. I became car aware pretty early. By the time I was eight or so I was making model distinctions. I blossomed into full scale car lust after I turned 10 and we moved to Adel.

I have vivid memories of sitting in study hall reading a story in CarToons about the travails of a drag strip owner with skimpy crowds. While talking with a friend he pointed to the grandstand and said, “Those are MT, and I don’t mean Mickey Thompson.” That was the first time I’d seen the initials MT associated with the name Mickey Thompson, a certified deity in my young car guy universe.

48 years later, I would complete the MT circle by learning a lot about his life and, to the extent they will ever be known, the details of his murder, from one of my friends and from Mickey’s son, Danny. I learned a lot of the story from Danny while I leaned against Mickey’s world land speed record car, an object of my life’s dreams that I never imagined I would ever see in person, much less examine in leisurely detail.

But life is like that. If you put a question out there, if there is a circle that is not closed, life, the universe, God, can and will answer it, as long as you remain open to it.

I created some photo albums of the rig in action here: http://www.hackneys.com/gallery/v/travel/fuso/

awesome!

Doug, can you please give us more details about the motorhome/4x4/camper used market over there and on your way to Ushuai? Are-they easy to find and what are the prices like?

I really like the idea of just flying over there, buying something and selling it back when you're done - but so far I have not found much on the Internet.

thanks

Fantastic trip and very nice images. If you going to Neuquen, Argentina, please take some photos in Plottier just few kilometers of the city of Neuquen. I will love to see some photos of place of my ancestors.
The Limay river is very beautiful. Another beautiful place is "El Bolson" a bit south of Neuquen.
Thanks for sharing with us so beautiful trip
Cheers

Christian,

I've got a thread showing the rigs we're encountering here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10612

I will try to shoot more of the manufacturers and dealer's stickers to give you some web sites to work with.

There is nearly an unlimited number of rigs of all types here in Argentina. It would be a great choice to fly 'n buy. Only downside is the VAT, I don't know if you can get that refunded when you leave or not.

Chucaro,

I'm sorry I didn't see this post in time. We passed through that area a few days ago.

We had a great day in El Bolson. It was Saturday, market day, and was full of a full cast of colorful characters.

Are you heading to Ushuaia? If it is in your plans try to see the nautical museum over there.
I used to have a lot of correspondence trough an Argentinian nautical forum with the director of the museum, Mr Carlos Vairo during my days in the yacht building business.
He is a very interesting person and a adventurer as well. I do not if he still doing trips in the channels with his yacht or going to the Antarctic with the icebreaker of the museum. I believe that they are taken people in the boat for expeditions. If he is there will be a very interesting contact.
Cheers and take care on the road.

Currently doing some town stuff before we head out to the National Park.

This experience so far has been composed of the following segments:
1. Very, very fast research on overlanding options
2. Tentative Fuso/Bigfoot choice
3. Proof of concept camper rental in B.C.
4. Finalize Fuso / Bigfoot, but switch to pickup camper rather than trailer
5. Design
6. Build
7. Alpha and Beta Test
8. Finish Build
9. 6 month test loop in U.S.
10. Ship
11. Repair
12. Deliver to Ushuaia

Now we feel like our expedition can really begin.

For most people, Ushuaia is the end or a big milestone on a long journey, but for some reason, for both of us, we feel like only now can we really get this whole thing underway.

We're going to take some time off here to reset and rest up, then head out.

All systems are nominal. All systems are go.

Scouting Report - fuel shortages in Patagonia

The reports of fuel shortages in Patagonia are real.

We camped next to a station that had been dry for two days.

Make sure you've got lots of fuel capacity / range. We've got 1,000 mile range and I am filling up at 3/4 tank.
