The future of 4WD?!

From what we're getting a feel for these days is the future of 4WD is not in expedition only or rock crawling specific etc... but a combination.

The world is becoming smaller and smaller with the internet, communication, and media. It's making a trip to the US or Africa much more obtainable than 30 years ago. Not only that but with a vehicle.

Why do we have to have a duty specific 4WD for just crawling rocks or expedition travel?

Talking with my friend Eric (Hjorleifson) regarding skiing these days, it seems as though 4WD's are headed in the same direction.

In skiing there's mountaineers that aren't really into skiing hard lines as they're deemed dangerous but are into the journey of being in the backcountry touring from lodge to lodge. Like this guy:

This guy would be similar to your typical expedition driver.
land-rover-defender.jpg

There's a bit of a resemblance... lots of stuff hanging off but doesn't look like they'd be able to handle some seriously adverse terrain. Would be satisfied with going from location to location.

Then there's the complete opposite in the ski world which would be the park rats. They look like this:

And do things like this:
Jossi_Spine_SequenceLR.jpg

Which is similar to Rock Crawling Comp buggies like this:

The future of skiing is the blend of both worlds. Which translates into Back Country Big Mountain Skiing. By either touring up the mountain or with a sled.

The gear is a bit different than the previous guy... Big skis, still mountaineering gear, but even the look is different. You wouldn't know it but they are both highly educated in Avalanche safety and Backcountry guiding as in Level III Avalanche and Level II Guides. Ok well the Kevin (red beard) is.:

And so is the skiing:

So perhaps 4WD's are headed in that same direction... rock crawler meets expedition... do I dare to call it new school!

4WD's that look similar to this that also have the ability to play in the rocks. No more trailer for the rock crawler?

It's self sustained rock crawling. There's gotta be a better name for this! These are vehicles that can do it all... go on expedition, crawl the rocks, hit the gravel roads at high speed, hit the dunes, snow wheel, and do the logging trails like McLean and Waiparous... but raise a few eyebrows doing it!

Skiing it's the same thing... can do it all really well and raise the eyebrows of the old school mountaineers and the new school park rats.

... and so the trend begins!

i really like that idea. its kind of what i have in mind for my 78 waggy. kind of a cross between expo and rock crawling.

i love camping and 4 wheeling. combining the two is like a dream come true.

There's gotta be a better term for this type of vehicle. It's not expedition in the old school sense. All-rounder doesn't quite fit right and nor does all-terrain.

In the ski world it's a big mountain ski, freeride ski a fat ski.... quiver..

There's no name as of yet to describe these 4WDs!... :smiley_drive:

Good analogy. I too ski rockered pow skis, long travel suspension bikes, wear baggy ski cloths, baggy bike shorts and these are the "other" things that influnce my truck needs. And so it doeos begin...

That's kind of where I'm at, I've done the big Jeep thing and am kind of bored by it at this point (no offense to the big Jeeps). At the same time, I don't want to skip a trip just because there are a few boulders in the way. I hate to say it, but the term has already been coined, stolen and ruined by marketing hype... (as always):

Sport Utility Vehicle.

That's a pretty good analogy I agree. But these vehicles have been around for years. And I would have to put my neck out there and say that I believe the JK Unlimited to be one of the best vehicles to accommodate such a build. Throw on a small lift, bigger rubber, front and rear bumpers, a winch and an Eezi-Awn on the roof and off you go. Obviously an FJ or Xterra would achieve a similar goal.

I personally think a Tundra is the best platform.....but that's just me and could be a slightly bias opinion :sombrero:!

I agree that a JK fits the bill nicely.....that's why we are currently looking at getting "the girl" a JK Rubicon.......I believe my garage may spontaneously combust with those two sitting side by side :)!

But back to the point, I like the idea of having a rig that's pretty darn good at everything, including comfy for the road travel.......that's why I migrated over to this wonderful forum.....I've tapped into the expertise from the rock crawling and desert forums.....now I'm learning tons over here. I take info from many good sources and try to apply things I've learned over the years to my rig.

I personally think that the whole rock crawler thing is overused and overrated. The term has been thrown out there for anything from a stock Nissan XTerra to a purpose built buggy. I get this feeling about most of the builds I see on this site which is why I love it so much. Nothing ridiculous and its all 100% useful.

Sport Utility Vehicles is the perfect terminology for these vehicles. Its too bad that the term applies to just about anything and everything slightly bigger than a station wagon.

Interesting
I actually had something different in mind when I read the thread title...

As vehicles become more and more "safety" minded, electronically controlled, etc....standard 4wd will be replaced by high tech AWD and suspension systems (as some vehicles already are) that will make modifications difficult to impossible..or at least very expensive. The older vehicles will still be around, but their numbers will go decrease. Opportunities to wheel will decrease as more public land goes private, usage rules change, etc.

Do it while you can...

I say keep it that way, I don't need (or want) a label to describe me or my truck.
