A hybrid for off road work actually makes a bunch of sense. Driving off road (assuming you are going all Baja on the trail) is usually a lot of slow work. Low end torque is great and you are constantly stopping. Having an electrical motor provide instant torque and engine start/stop automatically would save fuel.
I just had this conversation with a friend of mine last night. He mentioned a rough trail that was wet and he blew half a tank of fuel going like, 10 miles. I assume it was a winch fest but any fuel saving measure would be welcomed. Engine start/stop probably would have made a huge difference and the electric motor would've helped.
All of this is assuming that off roading doesn't kill the hybrid components/somehow screws up the vehicle with mud/water ingress that then costs you a ton of money to fix.
Not to mention then on your normal day-to-day driving, you have a fairly fuel efficient vehicle. Right now I've got my rover, then a cheap fuel efficient sedan. Being able to roll that into one vehicle is appealing.
