The Classic pose ...

of the overlander. Flat on back, under car, swearing in a variety of languages.

I love culture!

If you are passing the Western Okavango, try a mokoro trip with these guys. They can take you to places few have visited, and very cheap. Also good info on campsites and getting National Park campsite reservations in Botswana in this website.

Zimbabwe has fuel now. Runs about $1-$1.20/litre depending on where you are, petrol or diesel. The section from Vic Falls to Matusadona to Kariba and into Mana Pools would be a good addition to your safari. Few people going there now. The USA dropped travel warnings for Zim. Compared to other countries, park fees are just plain cheap.

If you need a route that is adventurous through Zambia, just let me know.

There is also supposed to be a route from Northern Moz into Tanzania now via Lichenga. Apparently the ferry on the Rovuma isn't operating and the new bridge isn't open yet.

well Spike is faster than me...I can't post any picture yet, Internet is too slow here at the hostel tonight.

It was great meeting Spike/Kalahari, we did some great work on the truck today and much more to come this week.

Looking forward to the braai...

Finally some pictures! Nothing too exciting yet, we have been mostly busy working on the truck and gathering all the supplies we will need.
Does not feel like vacation right now....

:)

Thanks to Spike we found a great place to work on the truck! Roman and his maintenance guy are really helpful. We have been working on various tasks (fixing the water tank leak, customizing the front bumpers, replacing suspension bushings, etc), things are going smoothly. We also located a new fridge for a decent price (R4400, about $550US).

It's nice to finally see my truck evolving and getting closer to my vision. It looks better every day.

And Cape Town really is amazing. We did manage to get a day trip to Simon's Town and the Pinguin reserve Saturday. With us was a friend who has rented a old Beetle from a local company (http://www.bestebeetle.co.za/)
This thing was so beat-up it was unreal. Apparently they have a few hundreds all over the city.

Still making some tremendous progress. We got new tires today, new mattresses/cover/fabrics and all the bushings on the suspension have been replaced. I now know all of the industrial neighborhoods in Cape Town.

:)

The last 2 days have been really nice and sunny but the rain came back today.

We spent Wednesday at the beach in Camp's bay, I think it's one of my favorite places in the world (sorry not my pic, credits to Google....)

If the weather is nice, we may be heading to Atlantis Dune on Sunday with some local friends.

Beside some kid who "proposed" to stab me if I did not give him some spare changes, no problem so far. We are staying in the bars/nightlife area of Cape Town (Long street) and there is a lot of drugs around here so things are a bit more edgy at night. But nothing I haven't seen in San Francisco...

:)

We are also very anxious to finally hit the road and head to Namibia!

We went for a quick trip (is it a trip? I must check the thread with all the definitions of travelling) out to Atlantis dunes so the guys could test their vehicle prior to continuing on their adventure. Also so they could get a bit of sand driving practice.

Me trying to convince them that it's not REALLy that steep

Is this a good omen? A lone rock pidgeon arrived and decided that it was staying. It spent the afternoon taking turns to sit on everybody then eventually went home with one of the guys.

Having a "braai". It started raining later but it didn't bother us.

Atlantis Dunes

All,

One fabulous thing about this forum is the opportunity to meet other people who share same interests and have similar values.

I had the opportunity to meet Spike a couple years ago through the Expo Portal and I can't thank him enough for his assistance and help in cape Town. Thanks to him, we found a great place to work on the truck. He also took us to the Atlantis dunes on Sunday where we had the chance to work on our skills...I had done a lot of sand driving in Australia but it was always on flat surface. This was the first time up/down/sideways on dunes...

We really had the opportunity to test our limit as my friend marc managed to put the truck in a very precarious position...sideways half the dune, ready to roll over down to the bottom. While trying to get him out, we got a second truck stuck too. All in all, it was a very good experience but you have been much more tragic if it hasn't been for Spike guidance.

I unfortunately don't have pictures of this event...but here's one when Marc was just starting to have fun, before the actual incident...

:)

We ended up the day with a braai with some local friends. It was a great experience and allowed us to discover a fabulous place!

No Braai for Marc, he was driving...

he actually had to enjoy a couple of shots of local "moonshine" to pay for his mistakes...

:)
