Photo time!
Custom bottom brackets made by my dad in his shop.
Rear bracket installed.
Rear bracket seated.
Front bracket installed and seated.
Setup complete.
We used aluminum plate to reinforce the bottom of the awning. We bolted straight through to the corner of the box frame.
Another view of the complete setup.
Carefree wanted around $60 for a crank. I made one for $5 using 1/2" conduit and a 3/8" eye hook. This is much more durable and a fraction of the price. It sums up my entire build in one clean photo.
Close up of the eye hook. I cut off a section to create the hook and drilled through both the hook threads and the conduit, used a nail as a cotter pin, and used zip ties to keep the nail from flailing about.
I still need to figure out how to keep the side door from overextending into the awning support arm, and I'm trying to source a 3/16" locking wire pin to more securely keep the arms secured to the bottom brackets. Hardware stores in the area only sell 1/4" pins. I'll try some Fastenal and West Marine tomorrow to see if they carry a smaller diameter pin.
