The New Guy and his Discovery

Hello All, I am new to the forum and land rovers. I have lurked for a while, here and other places trying to figure out what vehicle to start with as a project. Since I was a kid I have spent most of my time building multiple track cars for both quarter mile and road racing. Also, restored several cars and general mods to daily driver (My style is more OEM+ than fast and furious). Now it's time to tackle and learn about off-road vehicles. I am originally from NY and have been in AZ for 3 years now and want to start exploring all of the great places in the West.

Enough about me now on to what I am working on.

Project Details:

Build a on and off-road use vehicle to go camping, etc. with the family on weekends with a budget of $8,000 for everything. I ended up choosing a Discovery 1 simply because I loved them as a teen but couldn't afford them new. The other factor in my decision, minimal electronics, available parts, aftermarket support and they look great.

So here is where I started:

$1,700 for a 1996 Discovery with 78K on the odo.

Bad pic but regardless once I started stripping the car for painting I quickly realized it had rust everywhere, on the firewall, inner fenders, floor pan, etc.. I then decided to use the motor, tranny, interior and any other goods bits as parts for another car.

So logical next step, find another Discovery 1. The search was not difficult and I landed with this:

$1,400 for a 1997 Discovery with 165K on the odo. Not an ounce of rust anywhere as it was an AZ/CA car all it's life.

It needed a complete overhaul on the interior but otherwise body is in great shape. The motor and tranny ran well but leaked oil from the rear main seal, it did not matter much as I was going to replace it with the 78k motor and transmission from the 1996.

I have come a long way in the past two months and will be posting progress and pics from the resto/build that I am currently doing.

TOTAL TO DATE: $3,100

I am looking forward to meeting everyone here.

This is how it all begins.......... I'm only gonna spend $8k! $20k later
Welcome aboard

Only 20k, amateur :D

My Rover disease started with a $1500 RRC, followed by thousands in parts, followed by another RRC, and thousands in parts, followed by a 110 5 door wagon, and the bill is still running on that one....

Welcome to the disease called Land Rover :D

Thank you all, so here it begins.

This is what I started with inside.

Didn't look to good so I decided to take everything out and fix everything piece by piece. While making a game plan I noticed that the in/out to the heater core was bypassed which led me to believe that it busted at some point and the previous owner just bypassed to avoid the cost of changing it. Well I am not going to bore you with how I took it apart as I am sure mostly everyone here has done something similar at some point.

So here it is...

Game plan (Part 1):
1. Replace heater core
2. Replace carpet
3. Replace seats
4. Replace rear quarter seals
5. Replace rear door seal
6. Fix dash
7. Fix power seat controls
8. Fix Instrument and Switch lighting
9. Upholster headliner
10. Replace hood release cable

I'll post some detail later on some of the things I fix that are more complicated.

Yes and thankfully no rust at all. It amazes me that the white '97 has 166k on the odo and no rust anywhere and the green '96 has 78k and looks like swiss cheese. The difference of course was that '97 is a southwest car and the '96 was a NJ car.

Welcome to West of the Mississippi. Never buy a vehicle from East of Kansas. The body will be a rust bucket.

But, interiors of SouthWest vehicles will be dried up crumbs unless well oiled over the years.

Personally I'd rather work on interiors.

If you can find a copper/brass heater core from a RRC you are much better off than with the plastic/aluminum stock one.

Makes all the difference. My 97 from CA has zero rust as well.

The carpet is molded. How will it be replaced?

I have taken the carpet out of the Green truck since it was in very good shape with no stains and extremely minimal wear. I plan on putting that set in this truck.

Thanks for the tip. I wasn't able to find a copper/brass one but I did find an all aluminum one so going to go with that.

A quick update, completed reupholstering the headliner.

Decided to remove the sagging map pockets, I think it looks better this way.

Next on to the rear quarter seals.
