I know a wet-wet heat exchanger is neato & all....

but couldn't you just run a few tight curls of copper pipe around your exhaust downpipe and pump the water through that?
When I was at college a couple of the Mfg & ME guys wanted to build their own wet-wet water heater for an on-board shower. Doing the math showed that the surface area required was surprisingnly large given the temps & flow rates involved.

Exhaust temp being higher would reduce the surface area requirement, but IMHO not enough to be all that practical.

On the other hand, last weekend I got a demostration of how well the sled driver's exhaust mounted food warmer works. Very well I might add. The particular unit was all SS construction.
