I know this has already been discussed, and reported by our own venerable follower of all things automotive HAVEN, but I was just reading a Car and Driver article on the up-coming Infiniti QX56 4WD... As they mention this is the platform that will replace the Patrol world wide and frankly... IT"S HIDEOUS!!!!!!!!!!

2011-Infiniti-QX56-from-Front-View-Picture-570x378.jpg

That's just my opinion, but I started frowning a wretching as soon as I saw it. I guess they're trying to compete with the Grand-Cherokee for "vehicle farthest from it's original design intentions" . Both of those trucks are dead to me now. Sorry Nissan. I LOVED the old (GU's?? Personal fav. is the body style like RMP&O's gorgeous beast) Patrols (ok maybe not as much as Toyotas but hey, they're were still dead sexy all the same)

I can't imagine what Nissan was thinking in not having ANYTHING to compete with the Toyota 70-Serieds and Merc G-Wagen. I know Toyotas really are king of the world in most harsh environments, but I always loved the old patrols and as such I'm very very sad to see this "replacement" come about.

Personaly I think it's pretty insulting to continue to use the Patrol moniker in other markets because this thing is nothing like a Patrol or what the patrol was designed to be. It's just a somewhat different looking Pathy Armada. Did I mention it's HIDEOUS!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Oh Nissan, what are you thinking. First we start to speculate as to the demise of the Xterra, and now this. Clearly Nissan is no longer interested in the Off-Road market. No matter how good a truck the Frontier (or Navara in other parts of the world) is it's no (old design) Patrol or even a Toyota Hilux for that matter. Apparently the Patrols main function will now be shuttling rich oil sheiks out to the desert to go flaconing cause the sand is pretty much all it's good for now. Why not dump the Pathy adn at least keep making ONE or two usefull TRUCKS for those of us who still see value in strength adn simplicity. This new thing seems to be pretty much a "one trick pony" Drive on highway to the desert, act like a hoon out in the sand and come back home. Time will tell, but I doubt it's gonna be usefull for m uch more

So in sumation: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to you Nissan, Boo to you.

Sorry for the longwinded OP but I just had to get this out of my mind. I've saifd my peace so feel free to point out why I'm wrong etc. I won't take it personal if this is your favorite new car headed to America. That's just like, your opinion, man... :D

Cheers

Dave

On a side, unrealted note, VW is getting into the truck market with it's S.American Amorak P/U that looks to be a pretty neat truck. Seems like when one legendary piece of equipment dies someone else somewhere tries to take advantage of the gap in the market. hey, I just hijacked and OT'd my own thread HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I'm tired clearly and not thinking straight right now :D

I don't know what this thing on the picture is. I am pretty sure it does not belong to this planet. My brain can't process it.

we have then here already fugly leather cruise mobiles

but according to people at the launch they will cuncurrently keep producing the GU version

"But to keep faith with Patrol’s traditional fanbase, the current GU generation that first arrived in 1998 will continue to be sold in Australia beyond the arrival of the new Patrol, which arrives in 2011.

The hedging strategy was confirmed to Drive at the global debut of the new Patrol in Abu Dhabi over the weekend by program director Carla Bailo.

“In key markets we will continue selling the old Patrol to make sure we are bridging the gap," she said “For the customers who still want the rugged simple performance we will still provide that.”

That was in ref for Oz but here in the middle east they are popular for the ruggedness and not the leather and cd players.

This actually may be good for the mark as they could diversify the "patrol" range dividing like the LC and LC 70 series

me I'm happy with mine

Straight from VWoA, the Amorak is not coming to the States so forget about that. The closest its going to come is Mexico. As for the Patrol, what did you expect? Look at the offerings in this market and what the market dictates it wants from its full size SUVs. The answer is simple and clear cut. Luxury, size with off road prowess trailing far behind. Sorry. Land Cruisers can do it as theyve been marketed as luxury trucks since the early 90's. Mercedes can do it with their G Wagen as they as Mercedes and in this country, thats top tier luxury. As for the looks, that Infinitis design language so of course, the melting grille and swooping fender line is a requirement.

The XTerra will never go away. Its the truck that saved Nissan of America and is one of its best sellers.

The Iraqi National Guard had patrols, they drove around the green zone (as we were turning more and more of it over to their control) just looking like bad @$$es....they did at lest look the part. I do feel sorry for them, now they have to allocate a new badassmobile :costumed-smiley-007

Just here...
Heres my question: How many people thought the same thing when Toyota went from the LC80 to the LC100?

The QX56 is pretty much already available in the USA. You can configure yours here....

http://www.infinitiusa.com/qx/

The 4.8L petrol engine has been discontinued for the Patrol. Nissan no longer makes it, confirmed by friends in Australia.

A rumor is floating around that the Y61 will stay in production for certain markets for another year or two. That is a rumor and my Aussie friends say it is not availble in Australia. Perhaps the 3rd world?

I been asking for well over a year what about the Utes? Nobody has anything to say about it and there is no info out there on the internet. Nissan won't be amking this new ugly Patrol into a Ute. So the question remains....will the Y61 Ute still be produced or is a Patrol Ute also dead? My money is on no more Utes.

None of this should really matter to anybody in the USA though because Patrols have not been sold here since 1969. And it is not legal to import one newer than 25yrs old.

Glad to hear that they're going to keep the Y61 Platform available... That makes sence to me. Toyota does it with the 100 and now 200 Series Cruisers ALONG WITH the work-horse 70-series. I love the SFA Patrols, they're just like the 70 series: looks secondary to the function and needs of the vehicle. I love the Patrol ute's as well (are these factory trucks??? or are they Aussie or say S.African conversions like the quad-cab 70-series Ute's (I know those are custom one-off's)???

ANyway, again, glad to hear the Patrol isn't being completely killed off.

Cheers

I saw a 2011 QX56 on the road yesterday. It's a huge vehicle, and better looking in person than in the photos. The QX56 has more flair than the current Land Cruiser. (At a glance, I still can't distinguish the Land Cruiser from the Highlander SUV).

The QX56 sits on a wheelbase that's longer than a Chevy Tahoe/Cadillac Escalade. Probably the closest similar vehicle is the Mercedes GL350 diesel or GL450 gas engine SUV. The GL is about the same size and price as the QX56.

The QX56 is priced $6K to $8K cheaper than vehicles like the Escalade, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Range Rover. So it's something of a bargain as an all-weather, all-road luxury family conveyance. I expect real estate agents will love them.

Toyota took the Land Cruiser up market because they make the 70 series for rough and tumble use. It remains to be seen if Nissan will introduce a competitor for the 70 series. I'm guessing they won't.
