The Perfect Setup? Always in Search of it.

Wife and I have been over-landing now for 5 years and we have taken many trips. It is always on my mind, if a new type of rig is in order. I like the convenience of the Truck no trailer type rigs, and some of the things Alu-Cab has, as well as four wheel campers, like a flat bed setup. We do not have to setup to the extent we did here in the video, because it does take some time to do so. But when we do, we have a very comfortable setup to include AC. Please feel free to show me a setup, that can hit the trails, setup up teardown quickly, carry a Kayak, and two mountain bikes. Watch video below to see what our setup is, and the teardown process. I want to know if there is something I am missing. A rig that has a list of capabilities, activities that matches ours.

The perfect setup is different for everyone and depends on the size and makeup of your crew, the type of camping and events and outdoor fun you have.

Our FWC on a flatbed trailer pulled by a LC is absolutely awesome for us. Quick and easy setup and tear down, a place for Mom to stand up, dress, sit and feed the baby, etc. And an extremely capable vehicle when disconnected.

If your setup works well for you then stick with it!

35 years of overloading and Im on my 7th rig and Im still trying to figure it out. I started with VW buses 63,79 85. A 85 4runner with a solid front axel, A 89 ford one ton diesel van before moving to a 91 z71 with a four wheel camper. 10 years of tent camping or a palomino fold out trailer which we took everywhere from Canada to Cabo and all of the western states. For the last six years we have been enjoying an Outfitter Apex8 on our Duramax 4x4 and I am still trying to come up with the ultimate set up. This doesn't include Bicycles and dual sport motorcycles that are set up for overloading as well or kayaks and canoes I have used for travel over the years There is a balance of comfort vs stuff. I think that overloading in itself is a journey that evolves over time. At first you just want to get out and camp, then you want challenging terrain and eventually you'll want to do long trips off the grid. If you overland long enough you will want to complete an Alaska to TDF trip.....It's a sickness. Figure out what your travel goals are and work backwards. For me, Im into surfing in Baja so my truck is set up to cary boards, Kayak, moto if I want, 50 gallons of fresh water and 55 gallons of diesel. It will handle dirt roads fine but its no prerunner or rock crawler, just need to take it easy. Once we make camp we are good for ten or more days depending on how conservative we are with the water. I think your setup is pretty refined and probably works good for what you are doing. I just sold my FJ, great suv. I never got into taking any trips in it so I let it go.
