The Three Amigos

I was driving this afternoon (2001 Disco II) and the three amigos came on. I wasn't braking or doing anything other than 35 miles per hour. After I turned off the engine, I re-started it. No more three amigos. I finished my errand and started the engine to drive back to the office. No more three amigos. What's the deal? Is this something that just happens? Or is it a harbinger of worse to come?

They will be back probably wth increasing frequency.
The cause can be anythig from a dirty or lose conncetion to a bad hub to a shuttle valve fault.
If it comes back and stays you can go to the dealer to have it read or buy an ABS Amigo to read and reset your codes.
Whatever you do, don't throw parts at it. Find out what is actually wrong and go from there.

I've been visited by Los Tres Bastardos more than once. The first time was simply a wheel speed sensor that needed cleaning. The second time was a shuttle valve that later became the shadow of death for my ABS module. It would have been a $3000 fix had the shop not rammed my Disco through a garage door when their first attempt to fix it failed. I got an entirely new brake system for free after that. Curiously, that made it worth while.

This disco is pretty new to me. The wheels show a lot of brake dirt. I willing to bet a change to ceramic pads will keep the Amigos at bay.
