The V6 LR3...how bad is it really

LR Max

Local Oaf
I always told myself, only get the V8 LR3.

However, a V6 for a very good deal has shown up. Is it much of a power difference?

Really, I'd like to tow my 109. Not a lot, maybe once every 3 months or so.

Anyone have experience with the V6?

Thanks.

It's not a bad motor and certainly compares well with the Buick 4.0 that most Disco2s came with. It may come down to your driving habits. How hard do you like to accelerate and are you content to ease off going up grades when towing?

By pretty much any metric, the Jag 4.4 is a superior engine - but the relatively flat southeast may not make you miss it.

Just remember when purchasing that everyone wants the V8 and so selling it may be painful in the future - get the right price!

ask Nwoods. He had one with the V6. He liked his, missed a bit of power but overall a good engine by the few reports I have seen.

4.0 is/was a Ford engine AFAIK
4.4 is a jag

4.4 is nice just from a parts compatibility standpoint, its a good engine.

I just remember getting a few V6 LR3 loaners... gas mileage is generally not much better (if at all) than the V8. I took one up to the mountains once and the gas mileage was on par with the v8; the engine has to work a lot harder given the weight of the LR3 and the fact that it has meaningfully less power.

Depens what you looking to do with it. Have owned both the TDV6 and now the V6. I do get a little frustrated when I want to quickly excellerate, seems to be lacking a bit of torque comming out of the blocks as they say, but in general no issues. The diesel i.m.o had better torque, but then again I recovered a F150 stuck up to it's belly in mud yesterday so he proof is that it has more than enough power and torque.

I have a lot miles in a V6 LR3, and I drove a V8 LR3 for a few months as well. I never missed the V8 while driving the V6, but all things being equal, the V8 is slightly better, but the transmission lag is worse. The V6 ties into the tranny really well.

Years ago I wrote this article on buying a used LR3 and discussed the V6/8 differences briefly:
Buying A Used LR3 (V6 or V8?, Which Options?, Cautions?)

I don't know how the actual numbers compare, but they are noticeably slower. I wouldn't want to own one unless it was substantially cheaper than a V8.

I think it's something like 240hp in the V6 and 300hp in the V8. The V6 is NOT slower, but the V8 is more nimble and has a bit better acceleration for passing. Remember, each LR3 you drive is slightly different performance because it learns your habits and maps it's throttle response accordingly. I drive like a frustrated Trophy Truck racer, so my V6 always felt lively and quick.

I guess every single customer that comes in with a V6 must drive like a grandma, because they are all dogs.

At the time I had my LR3, I was also driving a 450hp Corvette Z16. I know what fast is. Honestly, the V6 LR3 never felt slow.

Well I passed on the LR3. Just didn't have good vibe about it and decided to fix up my 4Runner instead.

Think that was a good choice. I was not happy with any of the LR3 V6 loaners I got; 240hp is not enough for 5,500 lbs+.
