The "What Did You Do To Your Pop-Up Truck Camper Today?" Thread!!!

Nothing major today, just replaced some of the vinyl trim in the screw channels. Worked until I ran out of trim which means I'm only about 1/3 of the way done.

AHA! I discovered that I can access the spare tire lowering mechanism from under the truck and just use the short bar for lowering it with a 12mm socket and wrench- problem solved and I still get to keep my tailgate/back porch on!

No Bueno! Turns out I can't access my spare tire w/the tail gate down- arrrrrrggggg! So, the last time I got a flat was probably about 12 years ago, but you know what they say... guess I'll remount the rear jacks and see if I can get enough clearance just raising up the rear to remove the gate. I plan on traveling in some pretty remote places this summer and I do need to be able to access my spare. Lesson learned.

But if you travel with the TG down it will be sand blasted and dented from flying stones in no time.............especially if you do any off roading.

I did LOTS of stuff t9o my Palomino Bronco.

Opened it up, drained anti-freeze and flushed all the lines. Lit the stove, heater and hot water. Everything works perfecto!

Added a solid brass door knocker I found at a thrift shop for $1.

I'm ready to go next week. Taking the week off for a trip up through Maine and then to a Cowboy Action Shoot.

Read more about my camper here:

You might need to go to "Older Entries" at the bottom.

Same here. Tailgate is always down because of the camper and doesn't look any worse than any others part of the truck & great view of my hitch!

I'll third it... I run tailgate down and have had zero issues with rocks chipping the paint or anything like that. Perhaps if you run really loose gravel roads at 70mph there could be some concern, but at the speeds I run with a camper in the back, the tailgate just gets dusty.

Has someone actually got a bunch of rock dings in the tailgate from running with it down on a truck that had a rear bumper? Looking at the angles, the bumper on my truck (Short box) catches 100% of the stones thrown, even without mudflaps... With a long box would be even harder to get stones to hit the tailgate. ???

And for my actual report, I took the heater out of my camper last night so I can dis-assemble the fan AGAIN to try to stop the squealing... I took it apart last week and cleaned it out and lubed the shafts and bearings with white grease... 2nd night of OE it fired up and squealed REALLY loud for about a minute. Then it did it the next night too. Only on the first firing though... After that it was fine. I'm using chassis grease with Moly this time. That'll teach it!! :)

Chris, I've used graphite lube with success in the past as I was concerned about the heat and smell of grease inside the heater. It's been some years since I've done it, but it may be worth considering.

I was able to get a fair amount done today. My new faucet came in so I installed it. I ran new wires and installed a little push-button switch for my electric water pump.

That done, I spent quite a bit of time working on the furnace. I found several wiring issues, and after a couple of hours I have heat!:wings: I then started the installation of my catalytic heater, but that won't get finished until another day.

What have you all been up to?

Nice progress Sock puppet!

Today I sprayed some mcnett stuff on my FP tent & some techron on the inside (bits I couldn't get).

Tip of the day: where a respirator or at least an m95 Hepa filter whenever I spray stuff in the tent. All windows down I figured I'd be all rite (-nope DUMBA$$$!!!).

Other thing I did today (slowly & breathing vy vy vy deliberately & carefully...):

Worked on some more of my torsion bar Delete project. Basically I copied users timber & rhino 's method.
My torsion bar has not snapped, however I have hairline cracks outside along where the passenger side hinge is. I had used a few syringes of "creeping crack cure" a week ago, then once that set a few days later I overlayed some 5200.

Today's picks:

Camelfitter - what products and why?

Are you trying to waterproof the tent without the fly? Did it work?

please document the torsion bar delete so if others ever have to do it too, we can learn from yours!

Thanks

Only had a couple of hours to spend on the camper today, but they were very fruitful: With the help of my brother we finally got the tail lights fixed, sorted, wired, repaired, etc. so they actually work correctly! I've re-wired trailers in the past, and consider myself relatively handy with electrical, but this thing gave me a headache. Regardless, it's all good now!

It was Nikwax (not mcnett) I sprayed on the outside, my mistake & regular Techron on the inside-the areas I couldn't reach with the Nikwax. I "think" the Nikwax was TX for nylon. Not so much to waterproof the tent, as I have a rain cover, more to keep the water/condensation sliding down the tent rather than pooling and dripping.

The pooling/dripping seemed to happen mostly where the poles keep tension and are rite up against the rain fly.

As for the torsion delete, I think users Rhino & Timber have all the info including parts used (that's how I bought my ball joint ends). One of the problems I'm running into is what/how to make a long extension pole. I've tried a few different methods, but I'm not comfortable with how unstable they are while "flipping".
