TheGillz Explo Off-Road Trailer via Geotracker90 Build!

Well I don't know how many have seen me drop a couple hints here and there, but the day has finally come to drop my hat in the off-road trailer ring. I have been looking since finding this site and others for an equitable way to get ahold of what I will call my own Explo(ration) Off-Road Trailer for a few months now and through the kindness and willingness of our own Geotracker90 aka Mike, one is in the works.

All thanks and credit will go to him for designing and fabbing this puppy, and having visited him and his nice family myself I can tell you he takes care in what he does and has some impressive skills. I can't tell you how geeked I am about this coming together! Mike will be the better resource to direct build/technical questions, and he will chime in here all he wants I'm sure. I just don't have the skills or equipment to do it myself, although I saw a welder at a yard sale this weekend and was quite tempted, I loved taking welding in high school, but it never has fit my lifestyle since then. That will change in the future I think, but for now I am happy to live vicariously through a partnership. So without further adu, here are some pics and the process begins.

Here is the basic idea for what we are doing. The two blue boxes on the front are there to represent coolers, the rest is going to be made of 16g steel with a 2x3 tube steel chassis with 3500lb axle, electric brakes, 1250lb springs with shocks, and I got some matching 17" stock aluminum Jeep wheels to match our tow vehicle.

In order for the wheels to fit without having to bore the middle or have the center cap gone we went with some 2.5 inch spacers. (yeah, those ones)

The axle is due for delivery around the 12th of the month so Mike decided to get a start and go ahead and use his new break to bend up the side boxes and other non-chassis centric parts.

I'm running a 3500lbs axle and had no issue with jeep wheels, mine bolted straight on.

Wheels were 15" 5 on 4.4" off a 98 TJ

The only thing that did not fit, is the little plastic center piece...

No extra hubs required.

Axle was from Tractor supply down the road, same price as ABC delivered

Thanks for that info, my wheels are the newer ones off an 07-08 and I'm kinda anal about details like the center cap being on. :p

A short 10 miles south of the St. Anthony Sand Dunes. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you more details.

I got a couple Wedco cans in the mail yesterday, there are plenty of pics of them so I'll spare you, but one blue, one red from ExpeditionExchange.com could'nt be happier, super fast transaction and were on the truck the next day.

I have found some Samurai springs from a neighbor of mine that I will be taking to Mike, with the other axle and stuff that comes in today or tomorrow from Redneck Trailer, this saturday. We should be seeing some more progress after that.

The Sami rears are 39 inches and the fronts 36, any opinions on which we should use? Or the 1250 lb ones from redneck, that are I think only 26 inches long. How heavy is a loaded Horizon?

Just to clarify, the springs from Redneck are rated at 1250 lbs each for a combined capacity of 2500 lbs. Can't wait to pick up the goods on Saturday!!

Well Saturday Clark and I met up in Arco for a hand off of the trailer parts. On my way out there I stopped off at Vernon Steel in Idaho Falls and grabbed the steel for the frame. Boy I'm getting excited for this build. After I got home I went through all of the parts and laid them out to verify what I had.

I then mounted the wheel adapters to the axle and the wheels to the adapters. They worked like a charm. It looks like the measurements that we took in the begining were on the money. The axle ended up being 55" wide with spring center measurement of 40". With the wheel adapters this pushes the effective axle width out ot 60"; just a couple inches narrower than the stock JK Jeep axles which are 61.9" wide.

I then just placed the 1250 lb rated trailer springs into place just to eye ball things.

And then I did the same with the Sami springs.

I need to figure out a couple of small issues, but right now it looks like I'll probably be using the Sami springs. I may have to mix the front and rear packs to get the spring rate right for the trailer but time will tell.

As a side note, I had the spring pads mounted to the top of the axle so that i could do this in a spring over axle arrangement. If I do use the Sami springs, this little bit of for thougt will come in very useful. I don't think that I could use the stock Sami springs in a spring under configuration.

Well, I'll have to see if I can get any welding done before I get lazy and the long weekend gets here.

looks good, i'd go with the zuki springs. i've heard a few people say they think they need lomger springs but never heard anyone say they need shorter springs. if you have room, why not..

A generator trailer I was towing broke the main leaf of a typical trailer spring. This was approximately 35-40 miles SW of San Ignacio, Baja. It was a really long day just getting into San Ignacio over that washboard road at less than 5mph. Wasn't even my trailer. Rumor is that Rice & Beans bought the trailer and it is now their emergency power generator.

A mil wrapped spring would've saved the day.

It will want shocks with the longer springs.
