thinking of buying a 300gd with a 617a any help would be appreciated. To give some background I have owned a few Unimog's and a 300 wagon with a 617a.
I am going back to school for a few years so I am downsizing to just 1 vehicle. Before i go back to school i would like to make a trip to Alaska with the family in the G.
What should i expect to replace for normal wear on a G, or would cost of ownership be to high? I would do all the work my self and try to rebuild any parts that would be recommended
while i still have good employment.

Have you wrenched on the previous 'Mogs and W123?
I think the key is finding a W460 w/ 617A swap that isn't hacked together, isn't rusting apart(difficult that last one), and has been properly maintained thus far(should have at least a stack of parts receipts, if not parts/labor).
These trucks are heavy and go through tires and brakes quicker than the W123 would.

I looked at one this weekend it has a great body I could find only a few tiny rust spots that were repaired. But it was way down on power not much more power then one of my 404's with stock engine and lower top speed max on flat ground was about 60mph. The springs felt very soft and the truck needed a lot of little things. The asking price is 20grand seems a lot for a truck that needs an engine. I might just wait till I can find a newer G500.
