Thinking off buying a project FJ

I've found a 73 FJ40 that might make a good project vehicle. The guy wants $2900 but will take $2500.

I dunno if I'm getting into too much. What do you think? he says it needs a fuel pump, probably among other things I'll bet.

I see potential, but I also see a can o' worms :sombrero:

Underhood does not look maintained at all... and lots of rust... true 'Cruiser lovers never let that discourage a resto!

Wow, looks like alot of work but it would be nice to bring it back to life if you have the funds. Hows the frame look?

Ok, he said that the rust is on the verticals, that it has the upgrade motor. Something about 4L motor, and 4 speed from a '75. I'm going to call the CU to see how much I can borrow. I have a truck that I will sell if I buy this. I'll have to get it up here. Everything is still developing. He is supposed to have someone from chatt looking to buy it.

I'm sympathetic, because it's also my dream to one day get a 40-series and build it from the ground, up - exactly like I want it.

BUT - taking a step back . . . I definitely agree with TACODOC's "Can-o-worms" assessment. I don't think that one is worth even $2500. I think if you waited and looked around more you could find one in better shape for about that same price, or just a little more. Less than a year ago I bought a 1990 60-series that's in AWESOME shape for $3000. ( http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19674 ) That cruiser looks like it's LOOONNNG way from hitting the trails. That one seems to have an aweful lot of rust. That would worry me. It looks like you'd have to do a heck of a lot of re-work to go back and correct a million things that have been neglected before you could really start building it up into a dependable trail-ready rig.

But on the other hand, if you're ready to dive in head-first, and you're looking to do a full-on restoration that could involve things like body-off, engine swap, axle swap, etc, etc, etc - then that Cruiser you're looking at would be just as good as any, I suppose. But just about any 40-series is going to have its share of (expensinve-to-fix) issues.

Oops, I put this one in the wrong forum. I apologize. Mod's could you move this?

And I think I agree that this might be more than I can handle, and maybe not what I NEED, I want it, but I would have to do a lot of other stuff besides the restoration in order to use it.

I'd pass, unless you're capable of doing all of the work yourself and are actually looking for the purpose of restoring an old car.

If you really want it, start with the frame.

Is the frame rust free? i.e. light surface rust is OK... but holes, major pitting and scaling are a death sentence. A bent frame can also be a major PITA. If the frame is solid and the cab is repairable you have a foundation. If not I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole.

I agree with SAR Squid's point that you can find a better specimen requiring less resto if you look around and take your time.

I don't think I'm going to follow up, I WANT it, but I've learned to be patient, something will come along if it is meant to be.

As a current 40 owner I would walk away at that price.
There is so much work to that one you have no idea.

My 2 cents...

Body, body, body, then frame, frame, frame. FJ40's are very simple mechanically and with a 73' your going to want to upgrade most of it anyways, changing the front drums to discs, upgrading whats likely an F motor (no such thing as a 4L in a FJ40 but it could be a 4.0 liter?? though the F was 3.9 and the 2F is 4.2). And the mechanical stuff is relatively inexpensive compared to fixing rust on a body and worst a frame. In fact if the frame has any appreciable rust, its not even worth repairing in my opinion, considering a clean frame can be had in the $200-500 range. But that body would require a complete rear "re-skin" imo which can easily hit the $1k mark if your doing the work or $3k or more if your paying a shop to do the work. If your not looking to make it perfect, you could do some metal patching yourself and just make a great trail rig out of it? Otherwise you could search for a clean tub and then depending what you want to do with it, a bunch of small parts too ie. Turn signals, backup light, etc are all. The motor could be a newer 2F (you could read the motor ID # and find out easily) or it could be the original F with a aluminum valve cover installed. Is it a 3 speed or 4 speed?

It does have a rare drop down rear tailgate which in addition to the loops on the tub corners makes me think this Cruiser was likely an OEM softop.

I would say this is more in the $750-1700 range depending on things like trans, t-case and motor coniditon and ID as well as what kind of shape the dash, doors and w/s frame are in.

Good luck!
