This truck is unbelievable good

How are D5 owners getting along with their trucks a year later? The price bubble on LR3/LR4/D5s seems to be popping a bit in my area and I'm again kicking around picking one up for either a third car (LR3 especially) or to replace one of our current vehicles. We waited a long time for a Rivian R1T, then when our number came up, they couldn't tell us if it was eligible for the tax credit and we just decided that an electric vehicle (and short truck bed) might not best fit our needs, though it was an awesome truck. So it's back to Rover browsing.

My 2017 D5 HSE Td6 is rock solid at a hair over 70,000 miles and I still love driving it every day. Summer A/T's are going on soon, maybe upgrading wheels to some Compomotive PD1881's, but we'll see. About to get its second set of brake pads, aftermarket rotors from its first brake job are holding up very well.

Just hitting 60K.

Normal service items but just had the water pump replaced, did additional hoses and belts for good measure

Mine gas SCV6, wish I could have found a diesel

Otherwise I'm happy, and compared to my previous 3 LR3s and a 4 itsway better on and off road

Why do some Toyota guys have to jump in to bash the Land Rovers?

I love my LR4 and plan on replacing it someday with another LR4 when / if it gives up (Original timing chains at 120k thanks to 5k oil changes). 385 HP and 1325 lbs capacity in a car that handles off road like a champ and the 12+ hour drive to get there is like driving a bank vault.

2013 Lux HD specifically would be perfect.

And I’ve had multiple Fords, Jeeps, Toyotas and an LX (I got rid of it mainly because the front was so damn ugly to me - no disrespect LX guys - to each his own). Although this post makes me consider a diesel D5 now… but I still prefer the look of the LR4 - more traditional.

off to check D5 TD prices now…Do they all have two speed selectable transfer cases? If not, how can you tell? I know the later 4’s were missing the hi / low switch if they didn’t have it?

The D5 diesels don't like puttering around town all day every day according to the mechanic that worked on mine.
As long as you get it on the freeway periodically it doesn't have a problem with the DEF system clogging up the exhaust system.
Just using one for an intown commuter on city streets is asking for trouble. I never had any issues with mine because I live in the suburbs and you have to get on an interstate to go anywhere.

I really liked getting over 640 miles on one tank of fuel - Atlanta to central Pennsylvania without stopping for diesel.
But - since Pennsylvania has THE highest fuel taxes in the country, don't do that. Stop and fill up in northern Virginia instead, diesel in PA was 25 cents a gallon higher than New York State!

I replaced my LR3 with the 2017 D5 and then traded the D5 in on my 110 in 2020.

Look for any D5 with TR2. Those came with low range, but not necessarily a rear locker. the only way to get the rear locker on the D5 Td6 was by getting the 7-seat option, and then you forego the full-sized spare and have to accept the higher weight and slightly reduced cargo volume. I've never needed a rear locker though

Absolutely - for short stop/go trips, school runs, etc Turbodiesels in general don't work well because they never warm up the downpipe sufficiently to self-clean. A good once per week interstate run in manual mode keeping the RPM's above ~3K for about 20 minutes will generally keep them clean. I also always turn off the auto start/stop - push start button, push auto start/stop button. Any time the engine turns off in a turbodiesel, that's heat that gets lost, cooling the downpipe and DPF, causing the engine to be less efficient.

Vast majority of my trips these days are Interstate miles or offroad, and this thing just eats it up.
