Here's a bit about operating the first generation Thuraya satellite phone - the popular Huges HNS-7100. Just after powering up these phones sometimes show an error before making the first call. Here's the background and how to easily resolve it.

Unfortunately the Hughes HNS-7100 range is out of production. The newer more fashionable but less rugged SG-2520 and SG-2510 models came next but never reached the popularity of the HNS-7100 range.
Recently ruggedness is back at Thuraya with the Thuraya XT - resembling the HNS-7100.
