back from the dead?

@bftank- i was flat towing the sami with my montero to go do some 9-10 crawling, and jack knifed off the highway. sami went face first through a guard rail, then jumped it, rolled in the air landing on its side. then, from the shear impact, it bounced off the ground and landed on its tires. did a full 360. the bumper sheared from the frame and wedged under the driver rear of my mentero. it was a bad day.

looked like this

But, to add a little tech, the replacement for this sami, named OCHO, has an idea in rough draft at the moment.

i decided to keep this topless as much as possible. so i bought a safari top to keep direct sun off me, and my gear as well. but it keeps that open to atmosphere feeling i love. this rig only gets doors during winter. also, because of the open to world scheme, i wanted to have some lockable storage. so i was bouncing ideas off my buddy and in my head. i came up with a "platform" for the rear tub that incorporates a wall to separate it from the main cab if you will. this does a couple things. one is lockable storage when i lock the tailgate. the other, is it keeps my stuff from hitting my head in a "oops" moment! also, it helps keep the car stuff dirty and the camping gear clean!

it wont let me load pics now for some reason!

so what i did as a cheap rough draft was put a 3/4" piece of birch laminate plywood over the tub, cut to fit tight up to the rollbar and past it. then we made a wall down to the floor. screwed it down tight, and went with it. decided to put 2 hooks on top of it in a very specific location to hold my J.C. Higgins cooler. i use 2 turnbuckles and it works great, even at an angle wheeling! im glad i started with cheap wood, as i found that the jerry can wont fit in up right at all. so i would need to build the platform up an inch and it will fit right. this will take it from the 14" length across the floor to just the 6" taking space.

i have lately been thinking of making this sami a truck, cutting the body into a cab, then building a tube bed and storage under the bed. so we will see if the next phase of this storage platform will evolve or not.

will get pics soon.

Head over to the storage part of the forum and check out what there doing for truck beds , But a much smaller version for you . Maybe you could something like a double shelf thing ? Say a set of sliding drawers on the bottom and flip top cubys on top ? or another set of drawers / Then you can put bags and what nots on top of it .
Plus you can then incorporate you base unit into the design ? Def hang your tire ,gas and water outside . Food for thought . Good luck
