Time to retire the F150

So the search continues. None of the trucks I have looked at have panned out for various reasons.

The good news is my tax refund has already come in so I am now shopping "cash-in-hand"!

This never ending winter is really putting the damper on people looking to sell their truck I think. The right truck for me still hasn't come along yet. Hopefully in the next few weeks as things finally warm up and melt, the selections will increase.

I need a new truck! I'm itching to make plans for spring and summer camping trips!

I'll vote for a '00-'06 GMC or Chevy of your choice (Suburban or crew cab pickup). My yukon has been a joy since I bought it new in Feb '06. Very little maintenance has been required during the 115k miles I've put on it. Outside of the normal fluid changes, the only issue has been a broken windshield wiper pump ($40 and fixed it myself in a couple of hours). You can't go wrong with the 5.3L Vortec.

Another bump for a Chevy truck or suv. My 05 crew cab Silverado I sold with 168k in great condition for more than I bought it for 4 years before. 5.3 had great power.

I just purchased my 02 Tahoe with 200k. Also had the 5.3 and nobody believes me that it has so many miles because it rides great. I have no worries that I'll be heading out on a 4k+ mile trip with it tomorrow.

Meanwhile I have friends who purchased newer Dodges with less mileage that have had quite a few headaches.

One more note, up til the design change in '99, GM trucks and SUVs had rear drum brakes. In '99-'06 they were upgraded to four wheel disc brakes.

I remember when I sold my '97 tahoe for my '05 yukon - it was like stepping out of a truck and into a race car, seriously. The handling was THAT much better, and the motor would really get up and go compared to the 5.7 350 vortec.

My 2005 has drum brakes in the rear. Not like it makes that much of a difference unless you want to hit a lot of deep mud.

No kidding... what model? Yukon, Burb, Tahoe, 1/2ton, 3/4, etc?

Only 99-03/04 Silverados have rear disc brakes, I think stardard. GM was having so many problems with the rear parking brake assembly they went back too drums on the pickup trucks. The SUVs kept the disc brakes, 2005 and maybe 2004 late production SUVs half tons got hydroboost which is what you want, and all SUVs had dual piston rear brakes vs the trucks single piston rears. The best upgrade to a stock silverado is SUV rear brakes (dual piston), 2007+ tahoe PPV front 13" brakes and hydroboost, all bolt on.

Thanks for the commentary guys....a 2000-2004 Suburban 2500 is the vehicle I am waiting for. One will show up soon this spring.

Both are going to need maintenance as you F150 does, you can't avoid it. Unless you get into brand new with a trade in cycle every 3 years or a lease.

I bet not. Any used truck will need some work, but not like that. Trans dipstick rusted in half!? Rust bubble above the windshield?! Are you kidding me? My 98 tahoe has 200k miles on it and nothing like that is wrong with it.

This kind of stuff is why I'm sticking with my old 98 till death do us part. Newer trucks are just too complicated for a guy like me to work on, and frankly I think the safety and mileage demands on them are compromising their durability and reliability. All platforms have their weaknesses, but for the size of vehicle he's looking for, I think the GMT400 (88-99) SUV is the best all around package there is, followed closely by the GMT800 (00-06) platform.
