Tire inflation compressors

I finally got to try my MV50 out this past Sunday when some jokester thought it would be funny to pull all four of my valve cores while I was asleep.

Time to find new trail companions. That one deserved a butt kicking - unless the culprit was 12 years old. I have no sense of humor when someone tampers with my vehicle.

Thanks guys, MV-50 - SOLD!

Now I just have to find one cheap :coffee:

Cheers,
Mark

Good choice. Mine works great. Try your local Costco.

I used an MV-50 for two years with basically no problems.. Only issue I had was at high altitude in Colorado.. It would get 3 of my 35's back to 40psi from 15 and the 4th to 32psi before it would overheat and shutdown for 30 minutes to cool off.. I blame it on the thin air.. Needed more strokes to make the PSI as well as not cooling as efficently.. I cut the gator clips off and put a 7 pin trailer plug on to make life easier.. Side effects, the compressor ran better and never overheated again.. I also made a hose with 4 chucks so all 4 tires can be aired up at one time without having to watch each tire individually.. All four 35's can be brought from 15 to 40psi in about 25 minutes..

Last year I upgraded to the MV-50's dual piston big brother..

On a recent trip with several other folks that had Viair OBA systems I found myself aired up and had everything packed back up while they were just starting the 4th tire.. mostly 33's if I recall and only going to about 35psi from 18 - 20..

I hardwired and mounted it in the back end last week.. Now takes about 10 minutes to air up all four 35's from 15 to 40 psi..

Don't laugh at the battery.. It can actually start the truck if needed... It's wired up to the Optima under the hood via 4awg audio cable

Compressor is bolted down right where you see it.. It's sitting on a Super Secret Squirrel box.. Two 10's firing down.. Can't tell there's anything back there (except the compressor) when looking in from the outside.. Speakers only take up about 2/3 the width, so there's a nice spot under the deck to slide a recovery gear bag.

If you've got the Monsoon sub there you can put things on the other side.. Of course that's where the Fire Extinguisher, First Aid kit and TP are hid out.. Of course if you've got a deck back there and no need or wants for two 10's you've got a lot of room to hide a couple of those batteries and a compressor uner the deck and have room for a LOT of other gear hiding.

I use my large ARB compressor since I already have it to power my air lockers, it works well and takes between 5-10 minutes per tire. This may seem long but generally my 35" tires are going from 4-6 psi up to 30 psi.

That's pretty impressive. What was the weather like at the time?

It was about 6:00 AM, so it was only in the lower 80F's at the time, but the humidity was about 80% like usual around here. You wouldn't want to put your hand on the compressor when I got finished, but it seemed to cool down pretty quick when I was finished, waited about 15 mins before I put it back in the bag.

I also have an ARB compressor for a back-up for the back-up :D.

And I have my Powertank plumbed to a valved header under the hood with an 80 psig in-line regulator and a male quick-connect bulkhead fitting mounted in the bed next to the tank. So if my ARB compressor takes a dump on me, all I have to do is attach my fill hose to the tank and the other end to the bulkhead fitting, turn a valve under the hood, and lockers are up and running. And I carry spare ARB compressor seals so it can be rebuilt back at camp if need be.

I have a slightly different viair model than the one in the comparison -- but my 480 has been filling a 5 gal tank to 200 psi (for the occasional air tool and my bag system) for the 3.5 years I've had it stuffed under my hood.

I know I've jinxed it by singing it's praises -- so if you see me flat on the side of the road now please stop and help!
