Tire question for Sherpa II trailer...

All,

I am going to pull the trigger on an Outlander Sherpa II trailer this Spring. I was wondering what 'kind' of tire to get. I have Bridgestone Dueler Revo AT that are 'P' rated on my 4runner. Should I go with these 'P' rated ones or get the 'LT' rated ones? Thanks in advance for your insight and help.

Regards,

BWJ

You should go for the LT rated tires. They are more sturdy, and have a tough sidewall. To give you an idea, I wheeled with some on my truck at 12psi, aired them up to 50 for highway... while putting 63k miles on them, then sold them to LaOutbackTrail, who still runs them on his rig with plenty of tread life left. LT load E if you can, and they will last forever. BTW the sidewall on those tires has held up better than my new KM2s.

Can you elaborate?

I never ran Revos but my Jeep came with Dueler AT's ----- and they were, ummmm, sidewall challenged to say the least...

Wheeled countless times at various pressures with my Revos. They shrugged off everything... never had a flat, sidewall cut, or any issues. First time I took my KM2s down some of the same trails, I shredded a sidewall. Could be coincedence, but the KM2s are also E rated. I had a set of Revos on a previous truck of mine. I towed a lot of heavy loads with that truck, and the Revos held up well on the highway at 65 psi and did ok off road. Great on slippery roads and sand, but useless in mud. I never had a set with anything other than E rated, and I think 15" rim Jeep tires are all C or D.... I guess our mileage did vary! :ylsmoke:

EDIT: Misread. The regular Revos are crap. One ply sidewall. You could probably pop 'em with a spoon.

Yeah, my Jeep came with 18" wheels with C-rated non-Revo Duelers. Worst tire I've ever had on any of my trucks. I've since swapped wheels and tires.
Forum member Shorbusgeek had Revos on his 4Runner when he sold it and always did as well or better than the General Grabbers I had at the time.

But your KM2 news troubles me a bit. I was really thinking of getting a set in the 255/85-16 size next...

+whatever on the E-rated.

I bought some C-rated Goodyears A/T's for my trailer, and the sidewalls are softer than I'd like. You want really stiff sidewalls on a trailer.

Sent you a PM.

As a manufacturer the DOT only allows us to fit either LT tires or trailer tires on one of our trailers.

The side walls on LT tires are thicker and you have less tendency for trailer sway. A lot of the name brand tires have thin sidewalls, our best luck has been with BFG and Goodyear.

Make sure the load rating is correct for you application.

Hmmm, I don't think the new KM2s have a thinner side wall than the previous BFGs? I have been wheeling BFG AT and MT for the last 15 plus years and never had a side wall failure ... Might have been just bad luck.

Try and match the tires on your rig.. Wheels too if you can.. That way you always have a few extra spares should you REALLY need them.. Not sure about your particular tires, but I've seen matching P and LT rated tires..
