Tire question

My two front tires are worn out , I was wondering can I just replace both two front tires tires and do wheel alignment ? I was told by tire shop today that I need to replace all 4 tires even though my rear tires still are good. is that requirements for 4WD to have all 4 tires being replaced?

thx

Most of the information I’ve read states to install new tires on the rear if only replacing 2 tires. The current rear tires would then be rotated to the front.

Really only applies to AWD vehicles that rely on sensors to control traction, you will be just fine to replace the two and start with the new tires on the rear axle as mentioned.

Finally in expo white.
I was told in tech school that it’s the AWD systems that have a viscous coupling center diff that require all tires to be same height. On a part time 4wd, less of a concern.

Thx for info. I might end up to get 4 tires any way , because one of the rear tire also has small leak even though it was fixed at shop. If I go with all 4 tires I will go little larger size like 31x10.5x15. what do you guys think?

I had a 4wd Subaru wagon that I accidentally put two different size tires, front and back, on, It bound up in 4WD and I actually broke the 4WD shifter handle off trying to get it out of 4WD.I ended up yanking the rear driveline to get home. I am sure my tire difference was larger than you will have but something to think about if you struggle to get out of four wheel. That said I would just replace the tires and motor on. AWD you will wear out the transfer clutch and that can be expensive. Hope this helps.

I had that size on a stock Zr2 s10 and thought it was too wide for the weight, hydroplaning in the wet and horrible traction in snow. I was on bfg at’s.
Probably fine though on a Montero, especially if in a dry climate.

Currently I have Craftmaster courser A/T 265/70R15, not sure what brand to get. I drove 99% on city roads.

Depending on your budget I have a set of 31x10.50r15 Michelin Defender with less than two thousand miles on them with warranty paperwork included, plus a matching size spare with similar tread pattern. Message me if interested.

Keep in mind the Monty does have an AWD Viscous coupling for highway use. It is extremely sensitive to tire size differences. That being said slightly different wear unless dramatic should be ok. I had one tire a size off one time and it really caused problems.
