Tire suggestions

Well ive had my 4runner a few weeks now and started getting a few things together to start building it up. Got my Bilstein 5100 shocks in, and my spacers for the rear. I need to get new tires this week and i was thinking of just going with the BFG A/Ts, anyone else have any suggestions that we should try? Im plannin on going with the 265/70r17s

Im not sure exactly what the max tire size i can get is with the 2.5" lift either, thats why im just kind of playing it safe with the size im thinking.

Not really sure if i want to go with Mud terrains or All terrains, the 4runner is a dedicated trip vehicle so it wont be a daily driver. What do u guys think?

I'd recommend the ST Maxx as well. Much better than BFG AT: sidewall strength, better traction off road, sidewall tread. Happy with mine so far. I've run the BFG AT and wouldn't buy them again.

ill look at those then. It seems like for alot of people the BFG a/ts are just kind of the go to tire but since this vehicle is just for trips and offroading a little more agressive would be good. I had mud tires before but they were just cheap offbrand. Ill have to see what sizes the ST Maxx come in.

The ST MAXX tires do seem like exactly what im looking for, a mix between a mud tire and an all terrain tire and every review i see on them seems great. The only pain is for some reason they dont stock them here in Tucson so ill probably have to see if they can order them.

Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs are a good all around AT. In 17" they come in a "C" rating too. If they have a fault, you'll notice a bit of highway noise but it's soon forgotten about. I'll be taking mine into their second winter slip sliddin' down CA140 out of Yosemite. The first year, relatively new they did about as well as could be expected on hardpack/ice with meager amounts of sand on the road. In deep wet snow they dig and bounce and the truck pops out. Haven't had them in any meaningful amounts of mud.
Look at Tire Rack's Tire Reviews. They are under Commercial I believe.

I plan on sticking with these. I'm tired of agonizing over getting just the right shoe.

There are lots of great tire choices. I prefer driving on all-terrains over mud-terrains because they have better road manners and have the siping needed to grip wet/icy/snowy roads, which aren't strengths of a mud-terrain tire.

Here are Tirerack's survey results for all-terrains in that size. The Firestone Destination AT currently has the top slot followed by the new BFGoodrich Rugged Terrain TA It only includes the tires that Tirerack sells:

The Goodyear DuraTrac does have the top slot in Tirerack's commercial traction category:

I'm getting a set of KM2 BFG's just because I want to try the 255/85r16 size. I'd rather have a tread like this st/maxx though. Oh well, maybe some st/maxx tires next time. Now back to thinking about making an adapter for my spare tire carrier to hold this 33" tire.

Good luck!

I just like the fact that is kind of a compromise between a/t and an m/t. It will still probably be a few days though before I pick anything up though. I'll probably install the shocks and spacer tomorrow.

I think the jack furriers locally has it. Should I go with the C or E rating? I always had 3/4 ton suburbans before and always went with the E.

with a 2.5" lift you should be able to easily run a 285 70 17... and thats what i would do, once you get that lift on with the stock 265 70 17, you are gonna wish you had gone with the bigger tire. another nice thing about the 285s is they are a fairly common tire for most trucks(As well as the 265) and so there are plenty of choices. i have run the BFG ATs and i wont run them again, no thanks. id vote for durratracs or the maxx. if your gonna look at mud terrain tires, take a look at maxxis bighorns, i have run them before and i think im gonna go back to those when the time comes for new shoes, i had zero complaints with them -sure they are noisy but i kinda like it, it is a truck after all.

I've always thought "E" rated tires were overkill but some like the feeling of overkill. I'm like that with batteries.

One other point about Tire Rack, watch the total reported miles. Many tires will drop down the list as they get more reported miles in the reviews. The ones that maintain their position atop the pecking order, those are the honeys.
