TJ/LJ water storage

LJ water storage

I use this 5-6 gallon BPA free container in my LJ. Got it at Walmart, but amazingly it is not from China! It is made by a Canadian company. Thick walled, and holds enough for me and the wife to cook/clean etc...for a couple of days. Not the fanciest set up, but it works well for us. The sleep/storage kit was built to hold it secure in this location. When we need water, a little pull on the container to clear the valve out the back of the LJ and let the water flow. We just keep a length of tubing in our kit to refill if needed.

Mine is set up slightly different, like this:

Edit: I should mention that the top left is set up as a single bed, while for one long weekend the top right was set up as a double bed.

I actually have the Walmart container at home for normal water storage. I also found a pair of military surplus Swiss water bladders that I could probably hang from the rear bars in a pinch for about 10 Gallons of (arguably) potable water (Link: http://www.armysurpluswarehouse.com...on/swiss-military-water-bladder-20-liter.html).

The front runner stuff just looks more secure for use in a vehicle that's gonna be bouncing around. I haven't used the Walmart container in that capacity, but I've seen some criticism of them in regards to finicky valves.

I personally have had zero problems with this container over 2 1/2 years of use. As with all things, there is no limit to the money you can spend to upgrade to whatever system suits you. If you are going "hard core" 4X4ing for 5+ days then you might need something more suited to an extreme environment. When I built my LJ I had to decide what I wanted it for, and how much I was willing to spend building it. I looked into ARB fridges w/drop arm setups, suspension lifts, roof tents etc... Before long I realized I would end up with $35,000-$40,000 into a $14,000 rig! seems every modification leads to another MORE EXPENSIVE one! Just my $.02.IMG_2405.jpg

love the small and large drawers.. Where did you get them?

I have a home made trunk similar to this and we just load up individual water containers in coolers that sit right on top of the platform. I have been thinking about fabbing a mount for my soft top cage in the rear corner so that I can just put one of these there for quick access to water.

I used a drawer out of an old tool chest, Then I spray painted it inside and out with Rustolium Textured Paint in a color that matched my Jeep. The top portion is not a drawer, it is a wood table area that pulls out on a set of ball bearing sliders just like the tool drawer has. That way we always have a handy place to prep food, when we pull over for a snack, or just need a place to set something. Now that I have it I can't imagine being without it!IMG_0399.jpg

The Front Runner footwell water tank is great. It fits perfectly in my JK but I never tried it in my TJ before I sold it. I think it would make a great fit in the LJ but I can't be positive. If someone with an LJ lived close to Burbank, they could stop into front Runner and test fit it as they are very accommodating. There are hoses on either side of the tank to gardena fittings that eliminate the issues the jerry water cans with the difficult taps. That's all I got for now....

Please let me know more about your rear tire carrier. Looks like you can carry extra fuel or water containers.

I too use the blue 7 gallon containers from Walmart. The only issue I have had is I have placed two of them on my rack that is above my spare tire. While driving on the rough stuff it wore a hole in the bottom of one of them (metal vs. plastic) I also carry a 15 gallon barrel with a pump on my little Tentrax when I go hunting. Pretty heavy with the barrel.

Do you have any issues with the footwell tank and putting the rear seats down?

With the water tank in place the seats do NOT fold down. :-( I almost never fold the seats down myself and if I ever have anything oversized, I just throw it up on the roof rack and strap it down. I tend to have more people in the Jeep than gear to be honest. Kids don't even notice the tank on the floor as their legs (in a car seat) can hardly reach it in the first place...

Let me know if you need anything else, pics etc.

I use the ORTT water carriers that mount a 2.5 Scepter up on the wheels. One is mounted on each side in the back. This really uses space that is normally wasted.
