TJM bumper mod

Just got a "New to me" TJM bumper. The winch and winch mounting plate I've had for a while.

While I can mount the winch horizonally in the bumper and forget about it, I would like to mount the winch in such a way that it would be accessible from the top of bumper. This would involve reinforcing the bumper before it is cut, cutting out the steel that now covers the winch, welding the winch mounting plate and so on. Any suggestions are welcome. I have a welder, drill press, grinder, cutoff saw - stuff like that. Or should I just forget about it and mount the winch without mods?

Something like this:

And this is what I have to work with:

I say if you are comfortable modding the TJM bumper, go for it. As you have mentioned you have all the tools to get the job done and plan to reinforce the areas that will need to be addressed by switching the winch mounting.

Bottom line is it is your bumper and you should make it how you want it. Because of this, I say go for it!

Do it. I like the TJM bumper, better looking (to me) than others. I keep looking for a T-100 (2 really) bumper, I think I could mate it to the Tundra.

Go for it! I modified a 2nd gen tjm17 to fit my 3rd gen 4runner and made some adjustments along the way. I considered opening the top like you are suggesting, but decided to keep it closed.

Do it. I run a TJM T-3 on my 100 and want to add some custom tube work. Just need to find me a tube bender :)

I can't recommend anything more than what's already been suggested for the bumper, but as far as that nasty rash goes stop scratching and picking at it!

Mine started as a TJM...

Mounting the winch much higher than the frame rails will require ample reinforcement from the winch plate to the frame/bumper brackets. I recommend the brackets should be beefed up no matter what you do with the winch.
