To buy or not to buy(98' 4Runner)

I've had an 01' and 06' 4runner. Bought a 15' jeep rubicon. Sold that due to payments and having a second kid. Now diving a 16' Honda Civic lease. Have the itch for a another older 4 runner. There's an 98 with locking diff for sale. Can I get any input on an older one? Normal rusting. Do I need to be worried?

I'd pass, rust kills all the fun out of working on your on vehicle. There will be others.

Yeah, move along. That's not surface rust, it's scaling pretty badly. Looks like that thing is 1/4 dust at this point.

I would agree. I'm down in Southern Indiana and most of them look similar. Have a coworker who's axle just rusted through and was leaking on his '02 recently.

Last two 1st gen Tacoma's were purchased in Houston and Phoenix. Being from MN originally, I'll never buy a vehicle from North of TN. My 2nd gen spent 1 year in IL and was in bad shape. Ironically, my experience has been that trucks from the south, especially TX, are also cheaper to purchase.

I'd pass on that. Anyone else notice the gas tank skid is 95% rusted away. It's only the mounts left!

Do a fly and buy. Its priced a little high (@ $6k) and the wheels are a travesty, but it's got a lot going for it in accessories and add ons.


I've seen some nice cars from Georgia and North Carolina also.
