To snorkel or not?

95% of the time you will never need a snorkel, and it's a complete waste of money if you are going for the "poser look".

There are those rare times........

When brains don't keep you from crawling through deep water.........a snorkel would have saved this engine.

Ultimately, it's your jeep and hard earned money and if you want a snorkel added to your build, I would say go for it and don't look back.

There's always going to be that one guy who thinks he's king wheeler to piss in your cornflakes, but if they're not paying the bills, then they can go rust off.

Just my $.02... :snorkel:

:hehe:

If this guy comes through with the arb version for 200 orless, I'll do one..if not I'll hold out and buy buy new. And if doing that I'll just get the RHD version, relocating snorkel to the passenger side. Same price anyway. My personal preference honestly..different that everyone else, gives me the space from the stock air box to mount my dual battery to. My only worry with that chinese one is the material its made of? Being in the desert things dry out & get brittle quick..worried that may be an issue....

I'm in TX and it's pretty dry... no issues with the Chineese one yet. I did change the bolts to Stainless and paint the mounting bracket before install... the hardware was cheap stuff. I am happy with mine so far!

For a truly water tight set up, I used a cannister model from K &N that connects to the flex hose coming in from the snorkel.

be careful with that K&N filter in California. I had one on my old jeep and it does not have a carb #, they wont let you pass at a smog check even if it passes the emission test. I ended up having to go to junky neighborhood smog shop and sliding an extra $20 across the table

None of the pre 1991 vehicle year snorkles are CARB approved, if your just attaching it to the stock air box with no other mods you'll be Ok here in California. If you going to change or modify the air cleaner box, be prepared to re-install the stock box every other year.

See my above prior post, every other year the K&N come off and the stock box is re-installed.

Ever thought about the Spectre intake for the XJ? http://www.spectreperformance.com/index.php/91-01-jeep-cherokee-4-0l-red-hprtm-filter.html I have had this on my 01 for over a year and works great. A bit noisey, but after awhile you get used to it. And if I wanted to get really weird I could add a 90 degree elbow and set a humvee style top on it right in front of the wiper. Just a thought.

I was originally going to copy but do it my own way. Using a ford windstar air box, & doing a hummer style intake. I do like it, but not the price tag or filter size. Great suggestion though!
