Too much mileage?

Aloha everybody, I have a chance to pick up a 2001 e350 4x4 V10. It was an ex tour vehicle here in Hawaii and it has 280,000 miles on it. I have access to all the service records and the van has been maintained regularly.

I'd like to get this but the extreme high mileage and all the horror stories I heard about the V10's(as well as the 8's) make me leary.
Any thoughts or suggestions for me?

Mahalos!

I have a buddy with over 400K on a well maintained 5.4 V8, have heard great things about the 10 as well but dont know of any first hand experiences with the 10 past internet stories. If its a Ford with records and not a 6.0 diesel Id do it if it was cheap enough. The 6.0 is the only horrir story holder I know, an those ae just the first couple years.

I was talking to the owner tonight and he wants to trade for my 2001 quadcab Dakota 4X4. My truck is well maintained with no issues and only 99,000miles. I really like the van but I'm on the fence!
Been looking for 18 months and this is the first one I've seen for sale. There was another here brought from the mainland but it was 08 and they wanted $35,000:Wow1:

I had a van with 440 with the 351w in it that van still drove and rode nice when the transmission died. I see shuttle vans with the v10s for sale around here all the time with 300 to 500 on them but the doors seem to fall apart on the shuttles they all have tears and rips in the sheet metal from the drivers slamming the doors and the interior is usually pretty beat up with the occasional parking garge post drug down one side of it. I always ask the guys selling them how many transmissions they have had and everyone has told me it is all original and they never change the filter or the fluid??? Sales or the truth I do not know but everyone has told me that same thing. As far as I know mine was all original when the transmission died at 440k. If it does not have a hitch I guess you could get that milage after all it is a one ton vehicle being used to haul probably on average 500 to 1000 pounds around on a daily basis. If it was me around here I would jump on it but v10s are plentyfull around here. Even though I would have to think there is still a good bit of life left in that v10. If you get it watch the oil level I have seen really good running v10 use oil for what ever reason they run for ever but use oil the entire time. I have never owned one so maybe someone can chime in on this maybe they were freak cases.
It is hard to find 4x4 vans around here I can only imagine on the islands. If your bent on a 4x4 van it would be hard to let that one pass by. I know Boulder off road builds them and ships them out to the islands every once in a while, but I can't imagine there is a big pool of them to pick from.
Good luck.

If the van meets your needs, go for it. Worst case scenario is that you have to rebuild or install a new engine.

Thanks for the input guys, I'm going to go test drive it and check it out.
I don't want to sink a whole lot into rebuilding the motor, the van's primary function would be for family camping and fishing trips.
I have a 1973 CJ6 that's my play toy and currently taking up all my extra money!

If I pick up the van you'll be seeing my first pics here after the weekend.:sombrero:
