Tool Chests...don't know where to begin..

Do you really need a tool 'box'?

You didn't say what kind of wheeling you'll be doing. I do a combination of adventure/expedition type wheeling as well as rock crawling.

For my needs, a tool 'box' does not work for a variety of reasons.
1) Take up a lot of room
2) Fixed dimensions
3) Typically very noisy in rough off road terrain (plastic or metal)

Instead I opted for two 24"x6"x8" black zippered bags commonly available at most military surplus stores. These are new bags and probably not mil. issue. These bags have a hard insert at the bottom but the other 5 sides are soft and compress so they don't take up alot of room. I carry a pretty complete tool set and if there's extra room in the bag, it simply conforms to the tools and doesn't waste space

To avoid having 4x4 projectiles, the bags are kepts strapped to the floor. :sombrero:

I use a Swiss Army OD green box so far it's perfect for my needs.. used by the Army as a waterproof GP back.. latches closed.. I need to take some pics.. everytime I go to th elocal yearly ""gun show"".. I buy them up, about 20.-- chf each.. they are better then Pelican and the others.. they are one time used, and then sold off.. so I like them.. size is about 50 liters..

Good thread. I'm outfitting a 12ft enclosed trailer to serve as a mobile workshop / toy hauler that I'll be pulling behind my M109, so I'm looking for tool boxes that are larger than what most of you are interested in, but I need something a bit more rugged than the average race trailer. I hadn't seen those Pelican boxes or the Montezuma boxes before.

THe Pelicans are amazing cases, pricey but most of the time worth the price. i use a 1200 for my camera case which runs about $65 US

I plan on getting the CC1 1490 laptop case since it make sence to have a durrable case to save your comp. when on the off beaten path.

but as far as a "tool case" goes the 0500 transport case is way to pricey IMO

If anyone has ordered any of these cases via internet, what kind of postal fees have you run into?

I have the "Smart Bin" on my deck and it works great (bought from WallyWorld). I haven't noticed any water getting inside over the last 9 or so months I've owned it (granted, it isn't moving at 70MPH). I'd love to see Greene Horizon start making these boxes in more sizes... especially if they would add the removable bins like the Hardigg Trunklocker and make them stackable.

Also, anyone have any experience with:

* Zarges boxes (these don't look much less expensive than Pelican and seem harder to source in the US)
* Rubbermaid Action Packer containers (cheap and easy)
