Tool kit storage

oh, and my tool box is lined with vinyl...it doesn't rattle. I've had it on a few trips so far.

good to go as far as the tink-tink-chigga-chigga noises.

are there any pelican-based empty toolboxes? something that's
lockable and roof-mountable?

what about something like this?

seems like it would be pretty weatherproof.

I'm with you guys that like the tool bags and tool-rolls, but I'm not sure how I want to organize my tools in the trailer that I'm going to be towing behind my motorhome. Easily enough room for a toolbox or two, but I'm still leaning towards bags (portability).

LOL, I've got one of those signs too. And a roll-away full of the cheap tools I've collected over the years, those are the ones that I will loan out.

On the road, I have a tool assortment that fits in a tanker tool bag (bigger than the regular tool bags, but no pockets).

Not sure of the quality but HF has 2 sets available (SAE & metric) of ratcheting closed end wrenches with different sized ends (4 wrenches = 8 sized ratchets). For the metric set, they happen to be the sizes most common for Montero's so I bought a set. Looks decent but I haven't used them off road yet though so I can't tell you how long they'll last. You can see the set I bought above the Adjustable Open End Wrenches in the pic of my setup.

Also as for as 'loaning tools' that don't return...

I'll be replacing most of the tools in my rig with HF versions asap to avoid loosing any more that I don't want to loose.

This is my solution for tool and recovery stuff. may not be ideal for a jeep but if your creative enough the idea can be utilized.

i made this ammo can drawer slide removable.

everyone sure does bring a lot of tools with them!

i keep in my vehicle at all times, a comparatively small tool bag. i have only 3/8 drive sockets in it, 8-19mm, and 3/8-7/8in. i have two 3/8dr ratchet wrenches, various extensions and universal swivels. i only carry metric wrenches 6-19mm, and a few SAE wrenches (1/2, 9/16, 5/8, and an extra 14mm and 17mm). 2 screwdrivers, an adjustable wrench, and for pliers: snap ring, channel lock, plug nose slip-joint, wire cutter, and needle nose. add the 3/8-to-1/2 adapter, a 1/2in ratchet, and that's pretty much it.

like somebody said, if you know your vehicle, you know what's going to break and what you need to fix it. i keep the bare minimum on me. for what could realistically happen to my vehicle on the road/trail (and realistically be fixed), i have all the necessary tools.

and it fits in a 12in canvas tool bag.

if you religiously track your tools, you won't have to replace the ones that don't get returned, and you won't have to buy a "cheap" set to use on the trail. i use snap-on sockets, mac wrenches, and snap-on pliers and screwdrivers. i have no intention of buying a spare set with the intention of losing them. that's just dumb. i just make sure whatever gets borrowed gets returned, and i check all my tools before i zip them back up. if a tool doesn't get returned, it's your fault just as much as it is theirs.

Depends really on how challenging the trails are that you run.

In my case, being stuck on the dusy ersham trail because I wasn't able to change a tie rod end is not an option.

Plus I frequently help other wheelers since everybody knows hardly anything breaks off road on a Montero.:Wow1::sombrero:

Seriously, I've had to swap an entire rear end on my Montero on the trail before (when we were learning what can go wrong with them). Plus I was a Boy Scout, so you know their motto... 'Be Prepared'.:smiley_drive:

I don't want to have to be that religious about tools. I guess I'd rather be dumb than that anal.:ylsmoke:

I have my workshop set of tools.. usually stays in the shop.
I have a tool box for my outdoor maintenance / impromptu truck wrenching and fabbing... Then there's the truck tools.

The shop tools are a good set, the truck and outdoor tools are middle of the road.

I can't justify bringing a snap-on set for the trail. I can see a socket go sailing off into the bush... Murphies law.
I don't feel like sweating over a lost snap-on, I've seen it happen with other people.
On the flip side, I've snapped cheap box wrenches and broke other cheap tools.
Now I opt for 'middle of the road' for trail use. Once you snap that cheap wrench in the bush, thats it! Then your forced to improvise or rely on another wheeler, with a kit.

Think about Blue Point. It's "middle of the road" Snap On and reliable. I sell a lot of it and it rarely gets warrantied. Makes for nice storage under seats.

I actually have some blue point in my work toolbox and haven't had any problems mostly ratcheting wrenches and pliers though. I still keep a nice ratchet in my truck tools, i have had anything craftsman professional and below fail on me.

I'm sad to say I have a bunch of HF tools in one of my tool kits.
Nothing is more frustrating than a tool that breaks unless it is one that breaks when you need it most and the replacement is miles away.

As funds allow I will replace the cheap stuff with "decent" quality tools.

my rule of thumb is.... if it breaks, I'll upgrade, it if funds allow.
Or... buy it and sneak it home, so the "boss" doesn't find out until much later. :victory:

Here's an idea I've considered...

But in the end I stuck with this:

Unpacked, it looks like this:

Notice the molded black tool box. This thing ROCKS! it's 2 layers deep on both halves. Harbor freight special :Wow1:
