Top Gear: K5 vs. Jeep vs. Bronco

Not sure this tells us much (other than that a Bronco is fully capable of breaking a rear axle if driven by a lead footed New Yorker) but it sure is entertaining.

Stupidest off roading show I've ever seen. Maybe entertaining for the masses, but an insult to off roaders, IMO.

Not really an off-roader show...I'm a big Top Gear fan, glad the US version presenters are at least starting to meld. Season 1 was just terrible.

Just for entertainment. What I like better about the UK Top Gear trips of this type is that they NEVER pretend to have a clue what they are doing. That is far more authentic and endearing.

Definitely not serious offroading...they're just screwing around. I thought there were some pretty funny moments...

I love the original UK show, but the American one is painful to watch it is so bad IMO.

You guys didn't laugh when the Blazer lost the pink teardrop trailer?

Agreed it's nothing relevant to real offroaders, but I was laughing almost the entire time.

I do have to say, they nearly tore the old Model 8000 WARN winch of the front of that CJ pulling the Bronco! Note: That is not the way to use a WARN winch. :p

I am so glad this thread was created. Thank you original poster.

Yes it has funny moments, but the US version is just painful, like someone said.

There are so many things that irritate me about it, like "we have 12 hours to convert these cars (BMW 3 series, Ford Maverick, Mazda Miata) into monster trucks. The next scene, they are like full blown off road trucks with weeks of fabrication. (or the car bodies on completely different trucks)

This is the type of stuff the UK version did not do. They kept it more or less legit.

And things like the Chevy silverado pulling down the telephone pole with the inevitable "THAT'S WHY THE CHEVY IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST TRUCK YOU CAN BUY!"

And the harsh ragging on the 'import' Toyota as the 'punishment' for one of the three old trucks breaking down...

My first Top Gear was the UK version when they drove across Botswana. I must have watched it a half dozen times since then and I am fully prepare to watch it another half dozen. Their trip across the south interstates of the USA were especially in bad taste. Never-the-less, I think UK Top Gear is by far and away the best thing on the boob tube.

I think Top Gear USA needs more work but is coming along fine. Each episode seems a little better.

I look forward to more shows, from each.

I don't know what you guys are complaining about. The biggest insult that just grades and grades is the mis-pronunciation of Nevada. It's not, "Nev-AH-da," It's "Nev-AD-a."

They sound like nit wit, out of state politicians during election times.

the show has entertainment value & there is where they succeed

Of course the old K5 Blazer won! Seriously, it was an entertaining show but not how any of us would drive our own rigs way out in the boonies. The c-clip semi floating rear axle failure on the Bronco is a potential real deal for those wheeling little half-ton trucks even when driven with less stupidity. See, there are reasons why we all swap in big full-floating rear axles in our old half-ton trucks!

Ahh is it really any surprise that a show where the Chevy keeps winning is not loved on a forum where Toyota is religion?

Just kidding guys calm down! ;-)

I thought it was kinda funny, these guys really don't work like the UK but maybe in time. As to the offroad, well other than that rock climb it was pretty tame. Pretty ridiculous use of the skinny pedal but hey that's TV.

One more thing. BLAZER for the WIN!

When you aren't paid for with commercials and you get a full hour instead of 40ish minutes, you can show the extra stuff. I'm willing to accept them cutting out the intro, the fab, etc for more 'challenges' and the like.
