Check mine out...

Mine will (has) held up to 300 lbs easily. It's made of 5/8 square tubing weighs about 45 lbs. I put it together with a little wire feed. I have had it for about 3yrs works great too. If you would like some closer pics let me know.....

Heck yeah - Please forward some photos here so we all can take a look at your setup!

I am just about to go to REI and get a Thule or Yakima two bar setup for the topper - then I can I have a custom basket made just like I want it and for a lot less than the $600 for a Yak Basket with extension. The rack will also have other uses too - canoe etc.:ylsmoke:

Just thought I would throw up a few pics of my rack setup. The pics are a couple years old, but the rack hasn't changed (except I have a third crossbar on the cab for carrying a canoe). Personally, I am NOT comfortable with having a tent up there without extra reinforcement of the shell.

Rack pics...

Ok here's my shot at some pics. (Taken with my phone) I originally built it for my old regular cab Taco, I liked it so much that I modified it for my DC. I have built several now for people that I know. I am planning on building a new version this summer. But as far as I am concerned anyone can build this....

Hello:

We've installed Thule load rails & crossbars on the cab of our 2004 DC Tacoma, and we're in the process of installing similar rails on our ARE shell.

Dang nice install Howard. Makes me think harder about dumping my heavy exo-rack. Maybe down the road...

FYI for the cheap skates like me. The roof rack tracks are cheap items at the Junkyard. Look for 80's and 90's Jeep Cherokee's They have the longest tracks by far. Pretty standard on older Troopers as well but they are not nearly as long. The pictures show the roof tracks on my 88 Suburban. I used A good quality Nutsert to attache them to the body without having to drop the headliner.

The Kargo Master Serengeti had really cheesy gutter mount brackets that were easy to bend. I took some scrap 2 inch x 3/16 stock and fabbed up some brackets that allowed me to keep the rack very tight to the roof.

Got the tracks from $20 from the junkyard (bring TORX bits to get them off the Cherokee think it was a #30).
Few bucks for the Nutserts and stainless bolts I used since I already owned the tool to install them. So I was in buisness for around $30-35 as I recall.
