Torn CV Boot

You said in your OP you have a torn boot and nothing else. Replace the torn boot with a OE boot bought from the dealer. If it's an inner boot, I believe you replace inner and outer on that side. Don't replace parts unnecessarily: CV, axle.
My truck is 10 years old, lifted 2" with 177k miles on it. I had cracked boots and replaced just the boots.
Don't learn the hard way, stick with OE parts. You get what you pay for.

I think the lift might be the culprit as well. For anyone who has tried the non-OEM or rebuilt OEM CVs (ex Autozone, napa, etc.) how bad are they? I only ask because I have an autozone one as a trail spare that I am tempted to use. Should I hold out and get an OEM rebuild one? Id hate to have a part sitting around that I cannot use, but I would not like to do this a second time if I could do it right the first.

I would really shy away from a Chinese made axle if you wheel. (Autozone, NAPA, O'Reilly). I had a friend go through 14 or 15 of those axles before going with CVJ. Also, CVJ has a high angle off-road boot available. I say do it right the first time. Just my two cents.

I think I am going to bite the bullet and buy the CJV. My inner boot on the driver's side is the one that is torn. So I would have to pull the CV shaft off to replace it anyway. I don't exactly know how long the rip existed before I noticed it, but it does rain a lot here in Seattle so I have to assume its been exposed to the elements on the inside. Since I am in there I might as well replace it and do it right. Thanks everyone for the input.

No problem. You can always clean up and keep your old axle as a spare too. I'm running CVJ on my rig and have a new one as a spare.... never used it.

I replaced both of my axles with CVJ remains a month or two ago on my 4runner. Since its not my DD and I've been really busy lately I've probably only driven it a couple hundred miles since replacing them but so far so good. Dealing with CVJ was nice and easy too, I'd definitely recommend them.

Outer boots split on both my CV's 12 months or so ago. CV swaps with NAPA items. Inner boots rubbed so much they'd squeak at low speeds. So before the last DRV, I pulled both my spares and swapped them in....

I hope to reboot the two I just pulled. Sure is a messy job. Takes more labor hours to reboot the CV's than to swap in new/reman CV's... What's your time worth?

Will probably take a close look at the Tacoma World 'Boot Slide Mod' at that time...

I just got off the phone with CVJ and looks like $136.95 with high angle boots. Does that sound about right to anyone else? Are the high angle boots work it? They are $40 or something.

I agree with FJR Colorado. If you were a manual hub rig like mine, I'd say skip the high angle boots. But, with ADD, the high angle boot might save you from having to replace it.... even if you decide to run more than 2.5" of lift. That being said, if you don't feel like spending the extra cash... I totally get that as well.
