Hey,
Just did a trip from Toronto, Canada to Hualta, Mexico and am happy to communicate with anyone I can help.
Vehicle was a stock Subaru Impreza 05 with nothing but some Hella floods for night vision. Great performance out of the car. Low centre of gravity and decent pickup was excellent for emergency manouvers on switchback mountain roads (important! saw 3 accidents, one a double fatality on road stretch from Hualta to Tehuacan alone).
Drove 5000 km in the first week down (a few 24 runs) then took it easy and wound home (I only had 19-20 days total and wanted an adventure). Route was via Toronto, Memphis, Dallas, Monterrey, Veracruz, Hualta, Tehuacan, Mexico City, Dallas and home. Mexican road conditions variable..some very poor but nothing the stock car could not handle. In this case high manuverability and good acceleration offset road obstacles and made for relatively quick transit when desired.
As much as I would love a 30 foot monstertruck RV like some of you have, some of the roads were a true joy and having some performance at those times was a real pleasure. Fuel cost was also very reasonable. That said, sleeping in the hatch was a bit too cozy so I will likely upgrade to a somewhat larger vehicle for the next EX. Looks like a jeep through India, Pak, Iran, Turkey is next up to bat (see planned expeditions...I need planning help!). Leave in six weeks...gone for a year.
Great trip over all. Some shady moments getting hit up for cash at military road blocks. Coastal towns north of Veracruz were breathtaking, desert in Oaxaca unbelieveable, and of course some of our very own Canadian curvy country roads with a foot and a half of packed powder in an impreza ...Muy Bueno.
Thanks to the many wonderful Mexican people who were so friendly! And beware of the scary ones who aren't!
Let me know if I can help.
