Hello all I am new to this forum and my future plans include buying a Montero in about a year, and I am curious what kind of experience you all have had with towing and hauling different items. I will be looking for any Montero 97 and 2000, I prefer OBDII vehicles, so that is why those years. Oh and anyone who feels the need to mention a Yotor can please keep it to yourself, been there done that don't want another one. Want something different. I could not find this information on the Forums here and Just want to know what to expect. Thank you all for your time.

What are you thinking about towing/hauling? I have no idea how big the trailer was (length) or how much I was towing but the guy at the rental place told me that my 96 Montero LS wasn't "big enough" and I needed a "bigger engine." I just told him to hook it up. No problems. Got to remember its really flat here in this part of Indiana though.

Oh just maybe a small pop up or smallish camper maybe a boat again small. Nothing major or really long distance. I am just wondering since while I usually go by specs on stuff like this sometime personal experience is better than Specs.

I just remember seeing crazy pictures of guys in China and Taiwan pulling HUGE trailers with little Daihatsu pickups with 4cyl engines. One would think pop up campers and small boats wouldn't be any problem.

I personally have not done it, but I've seen monteros pulling very large party barge pontoon boats UPhill. I've seen pictures of decent sized campers being towed around. I really wouldnt worry too much, if you dont have anything very large.

My only concern would be brakes. Pulling a reasonable size trailer and load is no problem. I routinely pull a 4x8, it has a 2000lb load limit and i've had it close to that several times. The Montero pulls it easily.

Would I pull, with a montero, a 16ft trailer with a 5500lb FJ62 on it? Absolutely not.

Many, many moons ago (summer 2000) my 92 SR with puny 3.0L V6 towed Uhaul auto transporter loaded with my Nissan Frontier (~5000lb total) when moving from Columbia, SC to Kansas City, MO. Did just fine. Averaged 15 mpg. Actually my wife was driving it. I was in Uhaul truck with another transporter.
