Towing Question - Need more Power!

Very odd that the GMC trucks are rated differently. I always thought the GMC/Chevrolet were the same trucks with different grilles/lights. Seems you do get a little more towing cap. with a GMC. The Tundra still beats them. :)

Uh, the GMC is at 12,500lbs. 12,100 for F150.

Another thing to note: Although I don't put much weight (har har) on their tests, TFLtruck has rated the Tundra's pretty low on overall towing:

Meh, take that for what it's worth. Any of these trucks will pull a 4k lb trailer just fine. :D

I have a K1500 Suburban, a good friend of mine had a supercharged Tacoma, we both had 4,000lb boats four years ago. Supercharged Tacoma had way more horsepower and torque than my overweight Suburban. However every time we took out boats more than 50 miles I ended up with 7 people in the Sub, completely loaded with all the gear, still getting 10.5mpg while my buddy was in the empty Taco with his wife and an empty boat. I could not keep up with him in a straight line but he barely made it up the hills I cruised up. He also got 7-9mpg pulling his boat.

After several trips to California and Lake Powell he fried his tranny, rebuilt it and now drives a 3500 Cummins. I sold the little boat two years ago and now have a 7,500lbs boat dry that we regularly tow to California and Lake Powell. 5.3 vortec with 3.73 gears and 4L60e tranny has 250k miles and still going strong.

Supercharger might be the answer to your power needs however you should be expecting to rebuild the tranny pretty soon. Another option is to get lower gears, that would give you the feel of more power but cut back on the truck's top end. As someone said earlier that that 1-2 mpg penalty is way worth it with all the room and peace of mind you get in a 1/2 ton V8.

Good luck

You're conflating torque and horsepower, just like your friend in his Tacoma.
Too, it's been pointed out to you before that you are far exceeding the rated combined GVWR of your Sub. You will be smoking that transmission, sooner rather than later. I hope you've put a good aftermarket / improved transmission cooler on the vehicle and pay close attention to the trans temp.
(shrug)
Even funnier on the hp/torque thing, as you're the guy that stuffed those 37s in. You really are going to blow that trans out soon.

Just to throw a different idea out there, what about a re-gear?

This story is apples to orangutans, but...

I had a 79 Grand Prix with a 2.17 rear, not a typo! Even with its small V8 it was a dog. It shifted so quick and you had to get into it moving from 35 mph up.

As an experiment, drove it only using 1st and 2nd for a week tracking MPG. Was a much better drive, light throttle and go. Actually picked up 2-3 mpg.

Gears are "free" torque , could be all you need to get over the hump!

I have had 2400+ in the bed of my truck, wasn't squatting alot and nowhere near being maxed out

Having max tow and max payload option are great in a half ton

That would about accomplish the same thing as a supercharger. And from his response, he's also looking to gain comfort and range, so seems he's decided on a full-size.

Also, there is no free lunch. What you gain down low with a re-gear, you'll give up on HWY mpg. But for slow towing, not a bad idea.

Recently sold a 2k Ford ranger 4x4 4.0 auto 200k miles, tow pkg.
456 gears, I live in Colorado, overload every day with fwc eagle towing two ATVs. Transmission never went over 180*..
Gears.. it's for towing.

Guys all this feedback is awesome.. Decided I do want a different truck. The fuel range and ability to tow more weight is my driving factor. I think I'd rather trade up than put money in gearing etc.

Was looking at trucks but Thinking maybe a Tahoe or suburban... When traveling it's the wife my son and 2 small dogs...having the enclosed SUV would be nice with the dogs.

Thoughts about surbuban vs expedition vs excursion I've seen lot of excursion builds and some burb builds.

Check out the F150 Supercrew. Biggest back seat, other than Ram Megacab. You can put your son on one side, flip up the seat on the other. With the flat floor, there will be plenty of space for your dogs. Then you get the ginormous cargo space in the bed (go for the 6.5').

You sure about that? I'm 6'4 and with the front seat all the way back in my crewmax there is at least 6" between my legs and the front seat.

They're close. But compare the specs side to side. I always thought the Tundra Crewmax was the biggest, but the F150 edges it out.
