Toyo 70 light 4 door

Here's a short post to introduce my oddball...

1993 70 series 4 door with 4 cylinder 2.4 from the factory, badged as a landcruiser II

Looks like a venezuelan macho but LWB and 4 doors....it looks like this

well not this exact one......mines not done up, standard with a furry dash cover, some odd bolts sticking out of the roof, a bent window frame where some one's strapped a load to the roof and over done it, gutter has some rack marks, there's rust on the window frame, most panels have some light painting, in dull white

The one below should be the way mine ends up...only with coils..as it does not have leaf springs

I've been a seen Ians africa troopy, but they are few and far between here
LC's have almost a cult following with huge prices for old 80 series with milage that can only be described as obscene..

So I bought this old clunker....187,000KM....drives sweet, no bad noises
just a worn interior and general malaise about it.

Its complete, ice cold AC, and not much insulation tape under the hood

Does a 22R sound right for a toyo engine ?

Solid axles front and rear with trailing arms and coils..

I'll post pics as soon as I get it home !!

Expo dull white in color and a smell similar to old goats

"gasser (22RE) is an RJ78. Often named Prado in many markets."

Thanks, so now at least I can google some parts......I was really concidering a 21K 100 series....but this seemed like a cheap option...for around 4k$

Only thing I could see not working was a temp gauge, and some worn earthing under the hood, which is easily solved.

Not quite a full 70....but also not abused like the 70 series here carrying 400 gallon water tanks for the camels..

Very similar to the PZJ77, HZJ77, FZJ77 which are considered heavy duty and have leafs in the rear and also in the front until 1998. The axles have 8" ring gears which they share with the hilux/ minitrucks of the same era so, effectively the complete powertrain is interchangeable with a Hilux with the exception of the t-case whose output is offset to match the Cruiser standard of having both diffs on the right side.

400 gal watertanks are nothing for a Cruiser. I met a guy in Mali who just finished a dam building project in Sierra Leone and for nearly three years, every day, an HJ60 took 30-40 men with all their tools, shovels, picks, and hammers to the dam site 25km each way in one trip. Most of the guys were on the outside of the vehicle, obviously.

Very interesting ... I don't think I've ever seen or heard about that one ... as a 70 it's gonna get you there though, wherever that is

Have Fun

They were badged as Toyota Bundeeras in oz and were the 1st Prado in Japan.
The 22R is better than the diesels which were too slow without a turbo and the turbo models blow heads and gaskets.

I think the carbs pack up easy on the 22R. Something to do with the float or fuel regulation but its a simple fix

OK have recieved my wobbly old truck, low speeds drives fine...higher speeds.. oh dear....looks like she has a few issues...

speed wobbles and vibes, but none felt through the gear shifters...so
hopefully just some tie rod ends, wheel balance, and driveshaft UJ's.

Worst..steering box..pain....steering linkage.

Had a bit of a clack yesterday for 10 secs on start up when i went to pick it up....but this morning nothing so its either valve seals if it has hydraulic lifters or maybe the oil pump, if it has an el cheapo filter with no anti drain back valve.

Had'nt noticed before but has two two seat rear benches too....seating for 10 ???

Oil pressure on idle when hot a bit low, but when driving its bang on.

Need to do a complete filers and liquids service and fix the temp gauge, add a working radio..etc etc etc...oh boy have my work cut out for me..

anyway..thread is worthless without pics...:rally_guys:

Note the desperate need for larger rubber....

Fantastic looking 77. I find this ironic that I found this thread by googling PZJ77 and this came up...goes to show I should search EXPO before google.

Also ironic to note is that I too have found one. Its a PZJ77 in Chile, built in '92. Looks to be in decent shape and its just finished a Patagonia jaunt. I'll probably be picking it up in a few months and start preparing it for the trans-amazonica journey 2010.

Rumaged around underneath......steering main issue is wheel bearings, rumble / vibe front bearing on the transfer case..the rear loohs like its been changed

mmmmm that one looks a little diferent as it has leafsprings and nice seats, mine has a sort of drivers and dual bench front seat.

You might find that it has a 4.5ltr and not the 2.4 too if your lucky.

pretty sure mine's the base base model....

no troopy then at the end ?..and still in the US or moved to maturin yet ?

I'd love a troopy and I still want one in the future, but I'm going to hold out for an HZJ78 and not bother with a swap. The price difference between this 77 and a troopy for me would be gigantic so the price of a troopy would get me 3 and half 77's...or one old 77 revamped/reworked with extras, which I like too. Plus 4 doors is better for kids in the end, even though they won't be doing that particular trip with me.

My visa is in process yet in VE, hopefully headed down in about 4 weeks or so to go househunting and getting all the paperwork signed...of course you know the drill ;)

The owner of the 77 says the motor is 3.500 cc and runs quiet. The only downside I've heard about 77's are the transmissions dieing off. Any thoughts on this? I think both 77's need external rolecages, ala D110 that grahmncracker has. Tied into the roofrack, ladder built into the cage supports...could look really nice especially with dual tyre carriers on the back :D

Cheers

Hi UK - your Cruiser is the 'light duty' spec - basically has Landcruiser body, sitting on Hilux running gear, & has coil springs front & rear.
You've another photo in your first post, showing a 'proper heavy duty' Landcruiser - body looks a bit similar (are virtually the same from the A pillar rearwards), but is powered by either a 1PZ 3.5, or 1HZ 4.2 diesel motor, & has the normal heavy duty Cruiser running gear & leaf springs.

How did you like the LJ78 overall? We just picked one up for light exploration and transportation duties.

Really? You are planning to use an LJ in AZ? 2LTs have not proven to be reliable in situations where they have to work. Stay out of the hills and off the interstates and try to only use it when the ambient temp is under 70F. Swapping out the head to a 3L version will help. I'll bet Evan's coolant would work really well too but it gells in really cold conditions so we haven't tried out the theory.
