Toyo MT vs Yoko Geo AT+II

My friend just bought some new 315-75/16"" tires and he wanted to try them out in the sand and in rocky terrain.
He prviously had 305-75/16" tires but was not too happy with the tires, he had try to climb some rocky mountain, and he was always unsccesfull!
Here we are, he bought the 315"s and some original Landcruiser wheels, he paid 239.00 per tire and he traded his old tires and chrome wheels for the used original Landcruiser wheels, they had been polished by the previous owner, which he did not loke, so he painted them black and they turn out very good.
he installed the tires and here we are going to test them, I accepted his invitation to go and test the tires at Red Sands and the east Rocky mountain, I have the Yokohama Geolander AT + II tires and i did not want to be emberressed by not been able to climb the rocky mountain.
I am very proud of my Geo's and was eager to see how they would compare to his new Toyo's.

So here we are driving on deep sand in some dunes, and no problems for both of us.
We proceeded to keep on climbing to the Rocky Mountain and he goes first he makes it in his first attempt and yells out now I am happy with my Toyo's, he waits for me at the top of the mountain, and now is the momment of truth, will my geolanders keep up with the new Toyo's Mud terrain?

I took the same line he did and here we go up in a very steep stair looking rocky climb...

I made it on the first try with no problems at all, to which he yelled at

who needs Toyo's when you have the Geolanders wow!

Never the less he was very impress with his tires and mine.

We had a great trip and i found how capable my vehicle is.!

Look at the helicopter that passed by on the bottom of the mountain!

I was really impressed with my Geolanders, too bad they stopped making them or at least made them very hard to get.

It would be nice if we could get an AT tread with an MT sidewall! For what I do I need the sidewall of the MT/R (3-ply with either an 8 or 10-ply rating)...but don't need the big open tread blocks necessarily.

Good point Dan. I wouldn't mind a slightly less aggressive tire with a really tough sidewall in an 8-ply/D-load-range tire that rides nice on the road.

I really like my Toyo M/Ts, particularly their rugged sidewall lugs and stout construction. Toyo MT tread has a reputation of lasting fairly well and not being too load, though still not an AT as you suggest.

In my previous post I commented on your interesting concept of a stronger sidewall with a less aggressive tread. Seems I'm going to be doing just that.

You saw my 33-in (255/85R16) Maxxis Bighorn MTs at the Pyramid Lake Rally when they were very new. For the few miles I have used them in the dirt I like them. They are not terribly loud (but not quiet, I think average for an MT) but I prefer an all-terrain/all-season for most on-road miles, for less noise, rolling resistance, wear and to keep my MT treads as close to full depth as possible.

Due to my recent satisfaction with my Maxxis Bighorns I have decided to try as set of Maxxis Bravo 761 all-terrians in the same 255/85 size. While my Bighorn MTs are only 2-ply-sidewalls, the 761s are supposed to be 3-ply sidewalls according to Maxxis' website. Maxxis' site says all 8-ply and 10-ply Bravo 761 sidewalls have a 3-ply sidewall.

The tread is pretty mild but should be fine for anything that is not too wet (deep sierra cement snow or mud).

Does the Goodyear Silent Armor fit the requirements?

They are still making the Geolander AT/II's but they did not expand the sizing beyond 15-16" offerings. They are offering all the larger sizes in the new AT-S tire, which I belive is not as aggressive as the AT/II. It looks more like my REVO's than my AT/II's.

I like the AT/II and have been impressed with both on and off road traction including road ice and snow last winter. I too would like an AT tire with a beefier sidewall. For this reason, I may switch to the Toyo MT or something similar next time.

I have about 30,000 miles on my AT/II's - so far, so good.

Yep, I just have to love the Toyo MTs after having a little experience with them. They are stiff and heavy (& expensive) because of their construction but also tough with moderate noise for the tread design. Traction is very good overall, though maybe not aggressive enough for the big dog mud crowd.

I'm trying to leave 32s behind me with my second set of 255s for the 4Run, but I will still have a set of 32-in Toyo MT in 265/75R16 as they are too expensive to needlessly get rid of. I just might want to mount them so I have a very tough, moderate tire with less overall gearing penalty (32-in.) when the terrain or trip calls for it. If I was truly going on "an Expedition" where I needed a very, very stout tire, and the added 10/16" of height I get from 255s was not needed Toyo MTs would be my first choice.
