Toyota Air Filter Housing Options

Hey guys, one of the items damaged on my 2000 4Runner during the accident was the airbox. The insurance company was nice enough to give me $450.00 for that bad boy but I was hoping I had some options other than stock.

I am planning on adding a snorkel to the vehicle and by doing that I was hoping it would eliminate the airbox but by looking at some pics it doesn't seem that way.

I know there are cold air intakes but they don't seem to work in a snorkel application.

Any ideas? Thanks.

The snorkel is a CAI.

Yeah, I understand that but the snorkel attaches to the factory airbox. I was hoping the ductwork would bypass the airbox and attach to the engine side of the intake duct work. I didn't want to purchase a new airbox if I didn't have to.

I would stick to the factory air cleaner box as it does seal pretty well.

If you are going to put a snorkel on you will need the factory fender tube as well. I can't remember if the 2000 models had it or not. I know my '98 did.

You can get a used airbox on several forums for ~$35 yourself. 99+ 4runners need the taco fender tube as well (it's longer) if you plan on getting a snorkel later. I got mine from a forum member for $5. Just keep your eyes open.

Bypassing the airbox and filter would mean premature wear of the engine - don't skimp on a GOOD filter and stay away from dumpy aftermarket cone filters which never seem to work as well as the factory items. Not sure why you want to skip using the factory stuff, but remember that Toyota has teams of engineers with more education than either of us to design each component of their vehicles . . .

Oh and another thing. I was looking at the airbox this afternoon and also did some reading up on how the snorkels tie in. How watertight is that seal between the airbox and the tube that enters the fender. It seems like its just a piece of foam.....will it leak??
