Toyota Coaster 4x4 Transfer System

Hi,

I've got a Toyota Coaster 4x4 bus, a BB58, that runs the Toyota Megacruiser Transmission. Anybody know anything about how the (not connected) low range system works. According to the www.toyo-diy.com site, it has all the low range internals and there is a lever hanging out of the side of the transfer case, but doing the obvious, heaving on the lever, doesn't move anything.

Apart from not being able to use low range, it seems like a good thing.

Has constant 4x4 with a centre diff lock, low range in the transfer somewhere, front portal hubs, air con and a 4Litre intercooled turbo diesel, plus that famous Coaster strength.

Downside is figuring out what tyres to put on, comes standard with 17.5" in a 215/75 profile.

Hi Trev.

Welcome mate.

Does the Coaster have a 5 or 6 x 108mm pcd stud pattern?? Any pics? Is it a Toyota factory 4x4 like the old 4x4 Fuso Rosa was?

BTW where are you located down in Tassie?

Regards John.

Hi John,

Yep, it's factory built, the bastard love child of a Megacruiser and a Coaster bus. Front half of the megacruiser, engine, transmission, adapted front suspension and back half Coaster, rear diff, so it has two stud patterns, 6 stud Megacruiser on the front and 5 stud Coaster on the back with two spares. The Megacruiser came out standard with 38" tyres, but they changed the hub gearing to suit much smaller tyres on the bus with standard rear coaster gearing. There was an early model with portals all round but they are rarer than rocking horse stuff. I was going to import the Rosa buses, but there simply wasn't enough good ones left (not rusted) to justify coughing up for the compliance engineering. Pity, given the commonality with the Canter. It's not like Megacruiser parts are common. Still, it looks pretty overengineered.
One day I'll get to finish it, but at the moment it's a very expensive garden shed  .
I've had a bit of a look but I suspect 16" won't fit over the front suspension, but I need to take the rim off and check. I also don't want to go too big in diameter because I reckon I could remove the 2wd redundant wheel arches in the rear for a flat floor with smaller tyres, which would make organising the fit out much easier.

Coaster Tyres

You have said that yours has 17.5" rims Trev! I am beginning to wonder just how standard yours is? Mine is the same year and model with 16" rims and I am disappointed that the tyres at a bit smaller than I would have liked! Have you found out anything more about the transfer case and low range? I also do not understand your colour scheme! Mine is the brown or beige all over with white at the bottom the same as yours but without the red or blue. Have you had panel replacements?

Sprry I was wrong ......

At the last post I was going on what I was told over the phone! Yes it has 17.5 Rims and I would love to get a bigger tyre. That would fix the 10percent approx speedo error!

Hi

I really need a little Help. I’m about to buy a 4x4 coaster with a broken gearbox. Can I use a A442f box from a landcruiser 80 as a replacement ?
