Toyota Sequoia quest for information...

I am in the market for another 4x4 expedition rig and have been contemplating the Toyota Sequoia V8 model. I would assume mpg is not great. But, for my needs, local use and mild off-roading, it should suffice. Not tell me what you know about the ‘01-‘04 models with the 4.7L V8 engines, the drive train, front and real diffs and suspension.

I would try to go with 03-04. IIRC, the earlier versions had transmission issues. And I believe they went to a 5-speed transmission from 03 on.

They'd make good mild off-road rigs, as long as you don't need to go through tight trails. That 4.7L engine is real nice.

I think the 5-speed is 05-07.

Had an 07 sequoia limited. I liked it. Sold it only because I ended up needing a pickup at the time.

I know Landcruisers got 5-speed transmissions in 03 and 4Runner V8's did as well. Maybe Sequoia's came later on. Or are you thinking VVTI, which came in '05 (I think).

Not sure of Sequoias, but the Tundra got the VVTI and 5-speed transmission in 2005.

4.7 is a nice and, from all reports, a reliable engine as long as you do preventative maintenance (timing belt and such). Mileage isn't great. My '05 Tundra gets 14 mpg average, 15-16 on a good day, and 9 when towing heavy.

If I didn't need a truck bed I'd buy a Sequoia myself.

You may be correct. I know the tundra got vvti and the 5-speed in 05... assumed it was the same for sequoias

You guys are right. 5-speed and vvti in 05. Interesting that LC and 4Runners came with 5-sp 2 years prior to Tundra and Sequoia.

They are prone to cracked exhaust manifolds as well. I loved my 2002, but the tick tick ticking of the manifold (and the prospect of replacement) was annoying.

I'd shoot for an 03-04.

Has a mechanical hi/lo shifter with factory selectable locking center diff.

All first gen suffers from LBJ issue that plagues 1st gen tacos/tundra/3rd gen T4Rs.

5spd came on 05 with vvti.
