UPDATE: Cabover, safe, refrigerator

Sorry for the long delay between posts. We have been hard at work on the Rader. Here's the latest:

We finished the cabover bunk area, with the exception of trim and paint. We used laminate flooring and wood paneling as pictured before. We also wired in a shore power outlet and a USB charging station on the front end so we can charge our devices at night or plug in to watch a movie in bed. Here is a photo of that:

Next, we tackled the cab. Remember that disgusting carpet and those hideous pink seats that destroyed our backs? Well, we ripped out the carpet and installed molded vinyl, and we spent our Valentine's date perusing the scrap yard for seats. We got captain's chairs from a 1998 Montero, then secured them using the original rails and frames from the pink seats. Here is a before shot and a couple afters:

Next, we needed to address the refrigerator. The joy of older fiberglass campers is that nothing is square. So the refrigerator had warped to the point it no longer closed properly, and the pressboard framing around it was rotten and falling apart. So we ripped it out, sawed out all the rotten wood parts and replaced them, then fiberglassed in the wooden framing for the fiberglass frig casing near the outside vent panel. We then welded and installed a steel frame for the frig that would keep it from warping in the future. We also decided to add a safe underneath the frig that would be hidden by a false panel, and that too was welded into the frame and bolted to the floor. This safe is big enough to hold our important documents, laptop, and other electronics. Photos below:

Lastly, we welded some small frames for a compartment to replace the entrance step, so we can have a handy spot to store small tools, cords, etc. Pictured below:

The Rader is now at the shop, getting the suspension and alignment done. We did decide not to swap the axle, but we're still considering 15" wheels if we can find them. Next up: the floor!

Thanks for the update! How much did those seats cost you and how difficult were they to fit in the Toyota?

They cost us $90, and weren't too hard to fit in the Toyota cab. We did get the runners and frames off the bottom of the old seats, and without too much hassle we fit them onto the new seats so they could be properly bolted into the cab. The seats are a little bigger and higher than the old ones, which is nice for visibility reasons, but does make using the pass-through a little more awkward.

I'm intending to fix my 87 4x4 22re turbo loose sunrader roof top. I see your supports. that which was your process, cup the sides in initial, and let them cure, then get rid of the top to bottom facilitates and cup/fabric on the entire go across ray can handle? What sections are you presently setting up? ply? frp?

Quick update

Hi all!

So, we've made a good deal of progress on the Sunrader. We finished the cabover and installed LED strip-lighting. We also got new cab door panels to match the cab interior. And, we installed the laminate flooring. It's looking pretty good! We also got new shocks and springs put on, and we have a line on 15" wheels that we can use with our existing dually axle. Awww yeah! It's in the shop now, getting a couple things done, so I'll post photos when I get it back.

Nice truck and with a diesel too! If you want something pretty big, like a Sunrader shell, I would just buy a big camper shell that fits it with the overcab bed area and then you're good to go. Check at the Toyota motorhome forum too.

The Supercamper was expensive to build though but building might be your only alternative in Argentina. If you were in the US then I would say to buy a cheap beat up fixer Sunrader and take the shell off of it. They are rare but they are around. I bought one for parts to put on my "keeper" Sunrader and sold the parts Sunrader later when I was done with it.

By the way, the girl involved in the building of the Supercamper, Holly, is married and living in Nicaragua now and about to have a child.

Hey! Hello From Argentina

Hi all!

We are getting rolling on our 1988 Toyota Sunrader, and I thought I'd make posts here as we go for comments, suggestions, etc. You can also follow along on my blog.

Vehicle: 1988 4×4 Toyota Sunrader 18-foot mini-RV
Engine: 5-speed, 4-cyl 22RE

When we got the Sunrader a couple months ago, the interior was almost all original. Yes, that means nasty carpet and moldy pink upholstery. The previous owner had taken good care of her, though, and installed a new stovetop and redid the plumbing to properly dispose of separate grey water and black water. The recalled rear axle had been replaced with a full float, a large storage box added on the back, and roof mounts for kayaks installed. Other features include: roof/dash AC and heat, cruise control, 3-way Dometic fridge, 26 gallon gas tank, 6 gallon hot water heater, RV battery, double row timing chain with steel backed guides, air vent installed above the bed, patio awning, stereo and speakers, CB radio.

We expect to put a few thousand dollars and several months of work into this RV to get it ready for the PanAm. So far, we have done the following:

Hi expedition vehicle friends!

It's been quite a while since I last posted, but we have not been neglecting our 'Rader. Since my last post, much has changed for us. We now live in Colorado, waiting for our old dog(s) to die before hitting the road for South America. It just isn't fair to a 15-year-old dog, and she's still going strong. Colorado ain't a bad place to hang out for a while. Anyway, we're still working on the RV, taking our time. We have now completed the following:

Ripped out all the carpet in the camper and installed laminate flooring

Removed the broken taillight assemblies, glassed over the voids, installed new taillights

Dropped the gas tank to seal up multiple leaks

10371526_10203386891246017_9010228488303300908_n.jpg

Had custom airbag suspension fabricated, installed custom 15" wheels all around, then had to re-fabricate the airbag system because the new duallies burst one (ugh)
(Will post photos of new wheels/tires soon)

Found matching door panels for cab

And here she is, happy in Colorado!

Still on our list:
Refinish exterior fiberglass
Fabricate a new rear bumper
Install new, smaller storage bins on the rear and/or front bumpers
Replace the water heater (it died)
Various cosmetic improvements (i.e. new upholstery, curtains, painting, etc.)
New lock on camper door
Fix or remove AC unit
