Trade in new tires or sell them myself?

I just got my new to me 2003 DC Tacoma. It has nearly brand new Yokohama Geolander HTS (265/70) with 1600 miles on them. I want BFG AT/KOs 265/75. Americas Tire says they will credit me between $50-$80 per tire depending on condition. New BFGs cost $187 per tire.

Does that credit sound like a god deal or would I be better off trying to sell them myself?

Sell them yourself, Craigslist has worked very well for us. I am probably going to go this route myself when i change from 32s to 33s.

I've had very poor luck selling tires for anything more than a pittance via the classified. I got $160.00 out of the last set I did sell after advertising cost.

Lets say you decide you need $400.00 for'm. An add in my local rag runs $10.00 for three lines in the Sunday paper, $30.00 for three days, $60.00 for a week. Your down to $340.00 profit the first week, and that's if you get full price.

I've been happy trading in tires - got $80.00 each on my last set of 1/2 worn MT/R's. No hassel, no storage, no dealing with callers wanting to give ya $25.00 each, or wanting to buy one...

I have had pretty fair luck selling stuff via the "for sale section" on TTORA, but stock tires go pretty slow.

Try Craigslist

I personally love Craigslist. I have bought and sold quite a few things, including 2 cars and I found my 4Runner with their service. They are easy to use and best of all FREE. Since you are in the Bay Area, tons of people use it out there.

That being said, you are also going to be barraged with a lot of bottom-feeders trying to lowball you into practically giving them away. If the tire company give syou $80 a tire, then that is great and I would take the deal. The Geolanders new are only like $120 on TireRack so you aren't going to get more than that selling to an individual. At $50 a tire, you have to decide whether the 'hassle-factor' of hauling the tires home, storing them and dealing with selling them is worth the extra $120... Good luck.

I'm kinda with crawler & spike on this one. If I can get $80 credit on each tire thats $320 off my new BFG's, not too bad and no hassle really. If they can't give me at least $75 per tire, I'll probably just keep them instead of buying new since I'm broke from buying the truck! :D

thanks for the input.

Even if they are willing to give you $200 credit ($50/tire), it's not a bad deal at all. I sold a set of tires through Craigslist and it was a hassle trying to deal with some of those people. One guy said he'd take it and by the time I got to our meeting place, he changed his mind. The nerve!

Save yourself the headache and trade it in. Now, if they were only offering $100 or so for the set, sell them yourself.

BTW, I see brand new FJ/Tundra wheels with tires going for $4-500 on my local classifieds and Craigslist.
