Trailer axle

I am gathering parts for a simple trailer build. I'm curious where people are getting their axles from. I'm looking for a 3500lb axle, 6x5.5 lug pattern to match my tahoe, with leaf springs and all necessary mounting hardware.

I've looked at etrailer, and Amazon, but I'm not finding exactly what I want.

Thanks

When I was looking to upgrade my axles, these were the best deal I could find, but I shipped to a commercial facility. Residential delivery is additional, so it's cheapest if you can pick it up at a freight depot, or a business with a forklift. They were really easy to deal with. The axles came with everything, IIRC, but I also replaced the axle hangers so ordered the hanger kits that included all the bolts..

Craigslist opens up options.

Junked out campers might have great bones. Take the camper to the dump and have the heavy equip rip it off.

Plenty of used boat trailers that need work up top with good axles.

Going a step further could be a Tahoe axle welded on(would look cool but more weight/drag).

If you are in the dfw area, the southwest wheel place is your best option as you can pick it up. They will cut to a custom width too. I found mine locally in tulsa, and it was a bit more, but didn't have to pay shipping(tax was less than the shipping cost.)

Thanks guys, very helpful.

I am in the DFW area. It seems southwest wheel is the best deal so far. I can pick up locally and save shipping. With springs, hangers, u bolts, and all hardware it's $200 without brakes or $320 with electric brakes.

Nice!

I was going to drive down and pick one up, but found the exact width I needed here.

Don't forget spacers if you plan on using factory wheels. Sometimes the center bore of the wheel won't fit over the trailer hub (at least with a jeep). Make sure you check and allow for that if necessary... :)

Thanks for reminding me! I'll be using stock wheels to match my tahoe. I'm assuming spacers will be needed.

They will be especially if you want the center caps on. May sure you get at least a 2" spacer, when you order the spacer make sure it has a large enough center hole to clear the trailer hub as well. I ordered Spider Trac spacers in a 5 on 4.5" flavor and they didn't clear. I have to have them machined out to work. Then they are only 1.25 or so and not thick enough to clear my center caps.

trailer axle

I got mine from southwest wheel best price i found, got a Dexter 3500lb for $119 included hubs, 6x5.5 lug nuts,bearing/races, dust caps & spring perches.another $14.95 for the u-bolt kit to fit the 2-3/8'' round axle. going to use it to replace a 1500lb axle on a trailer upgrade in working on.

if you order the right hub face to hub face measurement you wont need to run any spacer or adapters, the axle come bare and you will have to weld the perches on to the axle

I was under the impression spacers were necessary for the wheel center caps to clear the hubs. Maybe that's not right.

You are correct... Center bore in an alloy wheel is not large enough. Even the spacers I bought will have to be machined as I wanted to keep it hubcentric like the jeep. I have access to two lathes so shouldn't be an issue.

Some steel wheels will work though.
