Trailer Brakes

Im designing an offroad trailer out of an old boat trailer. The axle is one of the 4" or 5" drop style, that im going to flip over to give me about a 5" or so lift, but the axle does not have brakes.

How important are brakes for offroad use??? Ive pulled hundreds of trailers that did not have brakes, but never for offroad use. Is it that big a deal not having them?? Eventually I would convert it to electric brakes, but for right now, the budget doesnt run to that.

What I keep thinking about is coming down out of somewhere like Coyote Flats, where the road feels like its straight down, and the trailer sliding around because it doesnt have brakes on it.

Any comments??

Pull the wiring for E brakes when you do your build, that way the installation will be straight forward.

At some point you'll be installing them.

That makes sense. Ill have to plan on that one.

Out of curiosity, will the new AT suspension work with a solid axle??
