Trailer build consideration

With the RTT coming this week and the fact that it takes all the roof area on the XJ i have been considering another trailer. I sold my 51 M100 last spring to a collector because i couldnt bring myself to modify it.

Close to a year later and M416's and CDN101's are getting pricey and picking up an Adventure Trailer is not in the budget at the moment. Then lying in bed the other night i had a revelation.

A few years ago when my father retired and planned a move down south a bud gave him a trailer.. it's a bed section of a early 60's Chevy stepside pickup. Dad decided not to use it, and it ended up in the hands of one of my buds. I called him the other day asking what became of it. He painted, installed harness and taillights and hasnt used it in years.... come get it he says.

Looks like one of these with a tongue attached.

I'm thinking, pull the rear bumper, side fenders and steps. This being a stepside it has no inner fenderwells... and has a tailgate for easy access. I could fab up a set of fenders like an M416, a hinged lid on top and i think it would look good. Similar to a 416 just a tad longer and a bit wider. Best part is it's not leaf sprung, it uses coils and trailing arms which would provide a good ride behind the XJ.

So, i ran around the corner earlier with a tape measure. The box is 80x54, 10' overall from tailgate to tongue.

Am i nuts... or does someone else see what i do?

Not at all!

Sounds like a great project!

The Chev. tub looks like a great start for a trailer!

That tub would house a 2200 series Eezi-Awn very nicely!

Do it!

What kind of rig is your tow rig?

Nic, i run a Jeep Cherokee.

My RTT is 71" wide, should fit well on this.

I think this could turn out looking good, i espescially like the coil suspension.

The Bed is excelent but Loose the truck axle if it is still under it. Lot of weight and there is drag created by the Diff. Trailer axle with brakes would be the way to go. http://abctrailerparts.com/

Might look at the frame as well and make sure it doesnt have a bunch of extra weight or a sketchy hitch set up. Lot of weight in a truck frame that you don't need.

One of the neighbors in the back of my hood has one and I eye it everytime I see it. Good looking trailer.

Grimmy, thanks for that link. They list an axle that may be perfect. I'll have to get it home, pull the fenders and check width.

Randy at ABC is the Man! I wish we could clone his customer service, I got my axle from him and it is a great peice, it was custom made for my app and the cost was great!

Could recommed anyone else higher! :D

I havent gotten a chance to tow the trailer home yet... but i did take delivery off the RTT yesterday. Tossed it up on my Thule bars before work last night and set it up this am.

My Jeep sits pretty tall and it was a bit of a chore removing the cover, opening the tent. Needed to use a stepladder.

Having it on a trailer will make setup much easier on my back.

Make sure you have enough cross bars to support the base of the RTT. We use 3 bars for the 1800.

Hi Martyn..

I havent crawled inside it yet. I have been looking for a third or fourth crossbar/towers but havent been successful as yet. I did buy this used from a local, was bought new this past spring and used for a trip west. He had it mounted atop 2 thule bars such as i do currently. I did notice the hinge didnt want to seat properly, pushing up at the center bottom made the necessary clearance. I'm thinking this is because it was used with just the two crossbars...

Do you suggest not using it till a third or fourth is installed?

Nice RTT John B :clapsmile

Thanks KC. I had to do something, ground tents werent cutting it for me anymore. It was an RTT, RV or Holiday Inn.

I was so tempted to grab one of the cheaper RTT's, but with 99% of the feedback i read being very positive for AutoHome and MikeS how could i pass up this deal? It sure seems to be a solid product...

The base of the Overland is plywood with a outer plastic coating. If the cross bars are too far apart then it can bow the base. Sometimes it's just temporary and it straightens out after the weight is removed. Other times it's bows the base and pulls the hinges out of alignment.

I'd ask Mike what the manufactures specification are for the maximum distance between cross bars and maximum overhang is.

I'll do that Martyn, thanks much.

SGT, a tad too far for me at the moment, i wont be heading west till 09. I'd like to try my hand at fabbing something after i learn what i really want in a trailer. Following Rezarf's build closely, very nice.
